Kings College Emergency Department is a dynamic environment seeing approximately 130,000 patients a year. It also houses. As a Team Leader you will be required to support the senior and junior team in ensuring the needs of our patients are met through the delivery of high-quality care.

The role involves working as part of a large multidisciplinary team including the medical team, practice development team, safeguarding, youth workers, mental health liaison team and the trauma team.

The Team Leader works clinically including unsocial hours and will be expected to work competently in all areas of the Emergency Department as well as taking charge of all areas and the whole Emergency Department.


The Team Leader will also be responsible for managing their own team of nurses and ensuring they meet their potential.

You will be actively involved in retention and recruitment. You will also be responsible for link roles giving you the opportunity to drive change and improve standards.

To maintain and demonstrate advanced clinical expertise in the care of those receiving emergency treatment in the department.


To triage, assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients and co-ordinating the care given by all members of the clinical team.

To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of safeguarding and attend relevant meetings.

To following clinical guidelines and policies and be involved in auditing and developing guidance.

To educate service users and their families.

Responsibly for medication safety and administration.

To support and develop all staff including students in conjunction with Matron and Practice Development team.

To participate in any research projects conducted in the clinical area as appropriate.


To act as "link nurse" (e.g., for infection control, sickle cell) ensuring attendance at and contribution to Trust wide meetings.

To be responsible for ensuring dissemination of relevant information from these to all staff within the Unit.

Clinical Practice

To demonstrate advanced clinical expertise in the care of patients receiving emergency or urgent treatment in the department.


To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients in the department on an ongoing basis, co-ordinating the care given by all members of the clinical team.

To accurately assess and interpret clinical information about the patients' condition prior to medical intervention.

To instigate appropriate emergency treatment and promptly report changes. To ensure appropriate prioritisation and streaming of emergency patients.


To act as a resource to others, providing accurate information, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients and their relatives.

Education and Research


To act as a mentor to both junior and senior staff, being responsible for the orientation, supervision and ongoing development of junior and student nurses, in conjunction with Matron and Practice Development staff.

To act as practice supervisor, responsible for completing competency documents for junior and senior staff, within agreed timeframes.


To act as a mentor to students undertaking further education as requested, ensuring a positive learning experience and facilitating the development of their clinical skills.
