The Role

The Creative PEC working in partnership with Newcastle University and The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) is recruiting a Research Assistant/Associate in Creative Industries (Economics) based at Newcastle University Business School.

Are you an economist who is passionate about the Creative Industries, and their role in the economy and society and would like to contribute to a research agenda that will shape sector-specific policies at the national and international scale? Do you already have research experience or have the desire to expand your research in this research field? Are you trained in applied economic modelling and have the ability to understand, process and analyse data? We are looking for an energetic and committed individual who wants to develop a high level of expertise in a fast-growing field and make an impact on society while producing excellent academic research.

At Newcastle University, you will be joining the newly created Creative PEC Research Unit, reporting to the Research Director, Professor of Macroeconomics, Giorgio Fazio, and working closely with Hasan Bakhshi, recently appointed as Professor of Economics of Creative Industries.

You will also be a member of the Economics Subject Group in the Business School.

Since its inception in 2018, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)-funded Creative PEC has succeeded in bringing about a step change in the quantity and quality of evidence available to UK policymakers seeking to support growth in the Creative Industries.

Funding for a further five years has been awarded in the next phase and, commencing in June 2023, the Creative PEC will be hosted by Newcastle University and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).

The Creative PEC will continue to grow the evidence base, addressing industry and government's current priorities for the Creative Industries including those set out in strategy documents such, for example, as the Government's Sector Vision, whilst at the same time advancing research into the longer-term challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

You will be joining the team at an exciting time as it embarks on a phase of significant growth.

Newcastle University has made an ambitious commitment to making the Creative PEC one of the world's leading centres for economics of Creative Industries.

This commitment has translated into substantial investment that includes the newly appointed Chair and a Fellowship under the prestigious Newcastle University Academic Track scheme, which also includes a PhD Studentship (see here for greater detail).

This role will involve carrying out research on the Creative Industries and helping shape and address the research pipeline of the Centre, working closely with other researchers in the Research Unit and the PEC's Policy Unit.

You will be well versed in quantitative methods and tools and will be able to collect and analyse large primary and secondary data sets.

You will also be adept at translating research for the benefit of non-academic audiences. You will have the ambition to publish research reports and articles in international peer-reviewed outlets.
This post is available on a fixed term basis for 2 years.
