Century Engineering is a dynamic Australian engineering solutions provider. We are a leading supplier of special purpose equipment and components to the Mining, Defence, Power, Rail and Water industries.

Due to our continuing development and success in key industry sectors, we currently have a position available for a Mechanical / Structural Engineer to join our manufacturing team in Edinburgh North.

About the role:

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical / Structural Engineer at the Senior to Principal level to join our Engineering Service team. You ll be working alongside of experienced engineers from other disciplines, i.e. Process, Electrical etc, on a variety of projects across Mining, Defence, Power, Rail and Water industries, responsible for mechanical/structural designs from concept, through to structural analysis, detailed design and fabrication drafting. You will be supported by professional drafting resource for execution of the designs where needed.

As a senior member of the Engineering Service team, you will perform design management function for high profile projects, provide technical leadership for quotation, interface with client and support in-house fabrication operations. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and contribute to the continuous improvement of our engineering practices.

Job tasks and responsibilities:
  • Lead and execute the development of design and engineering solutions.
  • Develop mechanical and structural engineering designs adhering to standards, guidelines, and good engineering practice.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Audit design work presented by vendors to ensure it meets and complies with the specified scopes outlined in the contract.
  • Provide peer reviews on works executed by others in the team.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentor young engineers.
  • Provide mechanical and structural engineering support to manufacturing and project management and ensure governance to a portfolio of projects.
  • Ensure mechanical and structural discipline of technical standards and adherence to standards and specifications for applications across the portfolio.
  • Provide technical support to project delivery.
  • Provide technical reviews of bids for engineering services and equipment, as well as recommendations for selection.
  • Work through the concept, design, and negotiating process with clients and appropriate key personnel to finalise contracts.
  • Deliver on strict manufacturing schedules and timelines.
  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of the manufacturing processes and systems to meet the specific needs clients.
  • Identify and address technical challenges, providing innovative solutions to enhance manufacturing efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support Business Development by delivering technical presentations and participating in client meetings.
  • Foster strong relationships with clients, understanding their requirements and providing exceptional customer service.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to drive continuous improvement within the engineering team.
Skills and experience:

Our ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and collaborative individual with the ability to think conceptually and strategically. They will have a customer mindset with a focus on building the department capabilities and competencies.

Ideally you will have several of the following skills and key attributes:

  • A minimum 5 years' experience practicing mechanical and structural engineering and design, ideally in a manufacturing environment, or similar experience.
  • Previous experience with metal fabrication.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO9001.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking skills and research skills.
  • An effective team player.
  • Self- motivated, driven, and capable of meeting deadlines under pressure regardless of shifting priorities.
  • Proficient in software such as Autodesk (Inventor) or Ansys packages.
  • Experience in a customer focused role.
  • Exposure to design or project management.

In addition you will have:

  • Qualified as Chartered Professional Engineer by Engineers Australia or be eligible to be chartered.
  • Experience in manufacturing engineering.
  • Senior level experience in mining, minerals processing and metals industries, preferred - experience with BHP would be an advantage.
  • A willingness to travel as required.
