We are currently hiring for a Managing Editor, to work remotely from either the US/UK.

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States or the United Kingdom.

The Managing Editor serves as the primary point of contact for client stakeholders and ensures that the work of the dedicated support team exceeds expectations for productivity, quality, and schedule adherence. The Managing Editor reports to the Senior Managing Editor.

Job Summary

The Managing Editor oversees journal editorial and/or production operations for clients' peer-reviewed journals from manuscript submission to publication.

The Managing Editor serves as the primary point of contact for client stakeholders and ensures that the work of the dedicated support team exceeds expectations for productivity, quality, and schedule adherence.

They have a thorough understanding of journals publishing processes, policies, and indicators of success and can take an active role in assisting an editor in chief and other stakeholders in advancing a journal's strategic goals.

The Managing Editor may supervise one or more editorial associates, directly in the US or UK, or via matrix management in India.

Duties/Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Managing Editor may include but are not limited to the following:

Customer Satisfaction

  • Ensure superlative quality and turnaround times.
  • Ensure meet/beat service-level agreements (SLAs).
  • Help identify opportunities for process improvement, adoption of best practices.
  • Engage meaningfully and regularly with both editorial and society leadership.

Editorial Office Support

  • Manage staff escalations as needed.
  • Handle presubmission inquiries/appeals.
  • Update customer websites.
  • Author research and calls for papers management.
  • Manage and train editorial board.
  • Assist with preparation for, attend conferences (when requested).
  • Arrange EIC/editorial board calls.
  • Update author instructions.
  • Undertake customer projects.
  • Configure manuscript systems.
  • Analyze system reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Staff Management

  • Prepare, update, monitor workflow protocols.
  • Allocate team resources in collaboration as needed, timely request resource needs.
  • Train and mentor staff, monitor performance in terms of quality, timeliness, and professionalism.
  • Account Management
  • Manage account on daily basis.
  • Oversee teams' hours.
  • Daily availability/interaction with staff and customer/publisher.
  • Assist in preparation of protocols and other documentation.
  • Adhere to or alert SME to negotiate contract terms, work with SMEs to keep SOWs updated.
  • Contribute information as requested for renewals and new business proposals.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years working in the editorial office of a scholarly journal.
  • Knowledge of scholarly publishing processes and best practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with one or more manuscript management systems (e.g., Editorial Manager, ScholarOne Manuscripts, eJournal Press).
  • Proficiency with standard office technology (e.g., Microsoft Office, teleconferencing, and G-Suite).

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Graduate degree/s is a plus.
  • Social media experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • General remote office environment (home office) involving intensive use of a high-end computer workstation for development and communication activities.
  • Work is 100% remote.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
