Derby, Derby, United Kingdom Network Rail Full time
Head of Asset Protection & Optimisation

Location:

Derby, GB

Department Name:

AM Asset Protection Programme Manager - East Midlands G1

About Network Rail:

Network Rail are on a mission. The mission is to become one of Britain's best employers and believe that starts with our colleagues and customers who we put at the heart of everything we do

Our ambition to be responsive to passengers and freight users, drives us every day and we're empowered to do the right thing for those who use the rail network.

We actively challenge unsafe practices and take ownership for addressing risks, resolving issues and protecting safety and wellbeing.

We're passionate about great service, and ask ourselves; what can we do to put our passengers and freight users at the centre of everything we do? We pull together as one industry because we care about people and collaboration is key.

View our short video on our Putting Passengers and Freight First (PPFF) programme that outlines some key things we are working on as a business:

The Eastern region operates some of the busiest and most congested rail lines in the country, transporting large numbers of commuters to and from lively cities including Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Derby, Norwich, Cambridge and London.

Brief Description:

The Asset Protection & Optimisation team supports all external parties completing work alongside Network Rail infrastructure, facilitating smooth, efficient and successful project delivery whilst ensuring there is no impact on the safe and reliable operation of the railway now or in the future.

This key safety role is fast paced and requires a diverse set of skills and experience, leading a large team dealing with many internal and external partners in a growing area of the business.

As one of the largest landowners in the UK, Network Rail Infrastructure works with thousands of people and organisations. These range from private residents who own property adjacent to the railway to large multinational companies.

Providing an advisory service to help stakeholders deliver their projects, whilst safeguarding railway interests in both short and longer term is where the asset protection team come in.

Our outside party customers can range from local authorities who are repairing or upgrading our roads, private companies who are investing close to our railways, or utility companies that just need to build over or under the railway to service their business needs.

There are an increasing number of organisations who wish to invest directly in railway infrastructure, improving existing stations, constructing new stations and freight terminals and even re-opening old lines.

Network Rail's Open for Business philosophy means we offer opportunity for stakeholders to develop and deliver schemes themselves, working alongside our asset protection team who safeguard railway interests until, in most cases, the completed scheme is transferred into Network Rail ownership.

The role leads a team of circa 30 people based in Derby, Peterborough and London, made up of railway engineers, project managers, construction managers and commercial/finance support roles.

They evaluate external party proposals, agree designs and methods of work, arrange safe access to the railway, and work with organisations to ensure their projects are safely and successfully delivered.

Very often the asset protection organisation is the external face of Network Rail and therefore has a key influence on our public reputation.

We are looking for a person who has a wealth of experience in the railway industry and has relevant project management, engineering, and / or construction management experience.

Ideally, they must hold a degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and/or be a member of a relevant professional institution.

The person must have proven experience at successfully leading teams of people managers.

They must have excellent interpersonal / team building skills and must be able to demonstrate that they have a customer orientated stakeholder approach.

The key challenges for the role in the short term are: establishing a team capacity and capability, whilst also improving customer focus.

There are opportunities longer term to build stronger external relationships and adopt mutually beneficial new / novel approaches.

About the role (External):
