We are currently looking for a Capital Procurement & Surgical Instrument Co-ordinator to work in our busy Sterile Services Department.

The department provides an important service within the Hospital, decontaminating and sterilizing surgical instruments for the Operating Theatres/Wards, Departments and external customers.

The department is fully accredited to European Standards and works within a Quality System. The department has various shifts, which cover the 24-hour day.


The post holder will work as part of a team supporting the management team, the Capital Procurement & Surgical Instrument Co-ordinator ensures medical devices are maintained and are suitable for the SSD's decontamination cycle processes.

This is a full time post working 37.5 hours per week. working Monday to Friday

7.5 hour shifts, with a half hour meal break.

Responsible for identifying and evaluating new and alternative items of capital medical equipment.

This will require arranging, conducting and evaluating / analysing trials of alternative, cost effective and compliant medical equipment, and the post trial compilation of recommendations.

Responsible for the ongoing identification of the Division's capital medical equipment needs.


Responsible for the preparation and submission of annual capital bids for capital medical equipment and for the preparation of business cases to support bids for capital medical equipment as and when necessary.

Together with the Medical Physics and the Estates Department, arrange for the end of-life disposal and removal from the asset register of those items of capital medical equipment that have reached the end of their life.


Responsible for the full implementation of electronic / radio frequency tracking of high cost items of capital medical equipment across all clinical areas.

This will require close working with the Medical physics Department.


Develops and maintains a rolling replacement programme for capital medical equipment while ensuring the medical equipment is supported by maintenance and service contracts where appropriate.

In addition, develops an asset register of medical equipment with Medical Physics and provides project support for the selection, installation and commissioning of such equipment in relation to the Clinical Services Development Plan (CSDP) and during other upgrades, refurbishments and other
service modernisation initiatives.

Assist in the preparation of technical specifications relating to the purchase of capital medical equipment.

Develop and maintain close links with the Supplies Department regarding the tendering, procurement and commissioning of capital medical equipment.

Assisting in the development of capital equipment maintenance policies and procedures.

This will require close working with the Medical Physics Department, The Estates Department, third party service and maintenance providers and the Decontamination lead.

Fulfilling the role of Instrument Manager as defined by HTM01-01. To take

responsibility for coordinating activity between the theatre, decontamination and supply / purchase teams and proactively reviewing and managing clinical requirements and industry best practice.


Close liaison with Senior Theatre Staff including Clinicians and Senior Managers, as well as with Senior Sterile Services Staff and instrument suppliers and repair agencies.
