Job summary

The post is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, a majorteaching hospital closely allied with the University ofLeicester and the medical school.

This post is available initially on a Locum basis for a periodof 12 months. The post has arisen as a result of anticipated sickness and maternity leave in the department resulting in a gap in service provision. Flexible working will be required withinclusion in to the hub and spoke service the team deliver regionally. The post will require travel regionally to deliverelective clinical care. Subspecialty interests will be supportedwhenever possible however a urology interest is desirable.

This post holder will join existing eight surgeons ( 1 Locum post) to participate in a 1:8 on-call rota which has been organised to enable separation of emergency care from elective care.

Main duties of the job

To support and participate in the tertiary paediatricsurgical service in the Children's Hospital including on-call. To work in collaboration with the existingmultidisciplinary team to enhance and further develop theservices provided for neonates and children inLeicestershire and beyond. To take responsibility for inand out-patients under the care of the named consultant.. To maintain the paediatric surgical service and provideoutpatient clinics and operative surgery to Peterboroughand Kettering hospitals.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To support and participate in the tertiary paediatric surgical service in the Childrens Hospital including on-call. To work in collaboration with the existing multidisciplinary team to enhance and further develop the services provided for neonates and children in Leicestershire and beyond. To take responsibility for in and out-patients under the care of the named consultant. To maintain the paediatric surgical service and provide outpatient clinics and operative surgery to Peterborough and Kettering hospitals. To support the neonatal services which has an estimated 11000 deliveries per year making it one of the largest in the country. To provide support and supervision to the junior staff, to provide teaching to the junior staff and medical students. To participate in and develop all aspects of the paediatric surgery workload including, outpatients, day care, theatre, emergencies and peripheral clinics. To participate in the acute paediatric surgical on-call rota, at a frequency of 1 in 8. To participate in the clinical governance and research activity of the unit, including audit, research, morbidity and mortality reviews, continuing development of clinical performance indicators. Shared provision of the teaching programme To enhance the profile of the Leicester Children's Hospital, and paediatric surgery/urology in Leicester through excellence of clinical service, and excellence in teaching, training and research including peer-reviewed publications and presentations to Societies. Qualifications and Training

Essential

MB BS or Equivalent Full GMC Registration MRCP/MRCS or Equivalent Current BLS Certification

Desirable

Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations. Higher degree MSc, MD or equivalent

Experience/Clinical skills

Essential

Fully trained in Paediatrics surgery. Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems.

Desirable

Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.

Communication Skills

Essential

Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues To be empathic and sensitive; capacity to take others perspectives and treat others with understanding
