C standards for record keeping and Caldicott Clinical Management:
Deliver skilled practical care to all patients and participate in the monitoring, planning and delivery of individualised patient With guidance from senior staff, assess situations that arise in the peri
- operative Actively support the implementation of Evidence Based Practice and participate in clinical audits as To participate on day shifts, as required, and rotation onto nights. Have an awareness of stock control and support Team Leaders in appropriate stock Input data onto the TMIS system, in order that statistics/patient activity may be accurately Ensure all equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturers guidelines, document and report any faults immediately to senior staff. Attend/participate in unit/team meetings.

Support staff under your supervision (theatre support workers, trainee operating department practitioners, student nurses) and act as an effective role Ensure rigorous adherence to infection control practices including hand hygiene and universal/standard Personal/Professional Development:

Identify personal and professional needs for career development of self and junior staff via the Trust appraisal programme and the NHS knowledge and skills Support, supervise and act as a preceptor/mentor to junior staff and Demonstrate a willingness to become an approved assessor for basic and post-basic students and participate in teaching programmes for other team members.


Recovery Duties:

Receive and identify patients post-operatively along with all relevant documentation from anaesthetist and theatre practitioner, ensuring all information pertaining to the patients peri-operative episode is correct, as per departmental protocol.

Ensure patients receive appropriate pain and nausea management whilst in recovery, including the initiation of PCA following Trust/departmental guidance. The practitioner is competent in the management of I.V. lines/ PCAs, arterial lines, epidurals and medication administration as per Trust Guidance.

The practitioner is competent in airway management. This is inclusive of managing patients in the immediate post-operative phase who has e.g. a laryngereal mask or and Gudel airway in place.

The practitioner possesses the knowledge to assess when a patients conscious level warrants removal of either of the artificial airways referred The practitioner reports immediately, any adverse changes in the patients condition or any other aspect of concern as identified in the NEWS score as appropriate.

The practitioner is competent in the recognition of primary post
- operative complications and understands the need to act in a timely Practices nurse led discharge i.e. discharges patients from the recovery unit to the ward area. The practitioner will implement a care plan for the continuing care of patient on the ward and provide a safe and effective handover of the patients peri-operative journey to the ward nursing staff, as per departmental protocol. The practitioner completes the recovery competency template through the stages novice, proficient and expert.


If a patients post-operative status warrants transfer to a Critical Care bed the practitioner will, under the direct supervision of the senior practitioner, work with/support the anaesthetist responsible for the patients care until the patient is discharged from the recovery area.

The practitioner will use their knowledge, clinical and analytical skills at the bedside and alert the anaesthetist, should the patients condition deteriorate and warrant medical opinion/advice.

The post holder will, on occasion, be required to work in traumatic and emotive environment.
