We are seeking a dynamic, self-motivated and passionate person wanting to work in a progressive business intelligence and data science environment. You will take a key role in identifying machine learning and AI approaches to meet business needs.

Do you have experience leading the delivery of innovative data science methodologies to meet business needs? Delivering quality assured evidence based insights to inform business decisions?

Can you provide theoretical and practical knowledge of Business Intelligence Architecture including Extract, Transform and Load (ETL), SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), Data Warehousing and Data Modelling?

The role will develop an array of data science approaches to ensure user requirements are met with accurate and well-presented outputs supporting the NIHR mission to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research. Main duties of the job Working within a small friendly team, you will oversee a variety of data science related tasks including developing machine learning/ AI approaches and leading the development of data frameworks and analysis of data to ensure accuracy of sources and data resilience to support NIHR demonstrating the difference it makes.

Main duties will include working with the Assistant Director for Evaluation Business Intelligence and Impact taking a leading role communicating highly complex and sensitive information relating to machine learning, and AI developments in line with new national initiatives. Identify and understand business needs, prioritise, and design analytical tools and processes to meet those needs. Design and develop automated reporting processes to gain maximum benefits from machine learning and AI methods. Ensure the NIHR Academy is up to date with developments in appropriate data science technologies.   • Working with the Assistant Director for Evaluation, Business Intelligence and Impact to take the lead in identifying machine learning and AI approaches to meet business needs.
  • Evaluate outputs, formulate and present analytical data visualisations for future reporting developments for NIHR Academy
  • Provide theoretical and practical knowledge of Business Intelligence Architecture including Extract, Transform and Load (ETL), SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), Data Warehousing and Data Modelling to team members
  • Provide reports to an agreed standard to meet the requirements of NIHR Academy Executive Board
  • Provide support and contribute to the formulation of strategies into how data quality and integrity can be maintained as part of business improvement plans which affect the organisation
  • Review, manage and lead the development of data frameworks (e.g. Hadoop) and analysis of data to ensure accuracy of sources and data resilience
Communications and Engagement
  • Identify and understand the business needs, prioritise, and design analytical tools and processes to meet those needs.
  • Working with Assistant Director for Evaluation Business Intelligence and Impact take a leading role communicating highly complex and sensitive information relating to machine learning and AI developments in line with new national initiatives.
  • Present data science analysis and developments other national NIHR programmes, wider NIHR, Department of Health and Social Care staff, other key funders of health and social care research and the academic community as necessary
  • Liaise with other national NIHR programmes, wider NIHR, Department of Health and Social Care staff, other key funders of health and social care research and the academic community as necessary
  • Deliver presentations to national NIHR stakeholder groups and relevant conferences
  • Act as a representative for NIHR Academy and NIHR more widely at NIHR and DHSC meetings, workshops, and conferences, where necessary
  • Work closely with the wider NIHR Academy Evaluation Business Intelligence and Impact team to ensure that they have sufficient data and tools to be able to respond quickly to Information Requests and long-term analytics
Technical
  • Provide advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of data architecture and data base design to support data modelling and the development of analytical data visualisation dashboards and reporting.
  • Be/Act as the domain expert for machine learning and AI, understand what insights can be delivered for the organisation and in national NIHR stakeholder groups
  • Plan, organise and implement a range of complex projects appropriate to the role using agile or waterfall project management methods
Information Resources
  • To design and develop automated reporting processes to gain maximum benefits from using data science methodologies such as machine learning, natural language processing and AI.
  • Provide technical configuration for virtual machines, algorithm deployment etc including security and access roles.
  • Co-ordinates production of analysis, publications, datasets, documentation and briefings
  • Evaluate, re-design and develop automated reporting processes to gain maximum benefits from machine learning and AI methods which will benefit the organisation
  • Ensure the NIHR Academy Executive is up to date with developments in appropriate technologies
  • Evaluate and propose changes to the machine learning and AI standard operating procedures to ensure they are up to date and aligned with policies
Finance
  • Authorised signatory within devolved limits agreed for the post
  • Responsible for monitoring expensive IT equipment and providing appropriate software recommendations
Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Degree in a data science, mathematics, engineering or computing discipline or equivalent experience
  • Graduate Diploma in a data science, mathematics, engineering or computing discipline or equivalent experience
Desirable
  • PhD degree in a data science, mathematics, engineering or computing discipline or equivalent experience
Other Criteria Essential
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail to identify data errors, inconsistencies or gaps to achieve standardised, consistent and reliable outputs.
  • Ability to collate and present complex data in an easy to use and understandable manner for different audiences
  • Ability to work with end users at all levels to gather requirements and suggest innovative methods to streamline approaches to model and analyse data to match business requirements
  • Ability to evaluate quickly and resolve problems, escalating concerns where necessary
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
Skills & Behaviours Essential
  • Advanced knowledge of data architecture, database design and BI technology
  • Extensive knowledge of statistical and machine learning techniques, programming and development in R, Python, SQL, Pig Latin, Java, JavaScript or C++ etc
  • Awareness of Information Governance and the importance of reporting standards and report definitions
  • Advanced knowledge of machine learning systems, algorithms, and artificial intelligence
  • An understanding of deep learning models and experience combining models through ensemble modelling
  • Ability to work as part of a team, build and maintain good working relationships both internally and externally to the organisation
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Experience Essential
  • Experience in predictive modelling, simulation, optimisation, and data visualization techniques
  • Experience leading the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions to meet business needs
  • Experience using natural language processing models to solve business challenge recognising entities in free text
  • Experience creating and developing SQL server queries and/or stored procedures
  • Experience using and developing data frameworks (e.g. Hadoop)
  • Experience developing and scripting dashboards and data visualisations using tools such as QlikView, QlikSense and Tableau
  • Experience interpreting and analysing complex data sets from multiple databases and spreadsheets to produce reports
  • Writing reports and managing the production of technical publications
Desirable
  • Advanced development and application of google platforms, Microsoft office and databases
  • Developing SSRS or other SQL based reporting tools
  • Experience with SQL server source control
