The AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) Team are looking for a Health and Safety Advisor to join them as part of the wider SALMO (Salvage & Marine Operations) department.

Our SALMO team is the lead across the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for the provision ofmarine salvage and emergency response.


Our specialists including Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Environmental Scientists, ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Pilots and Divers provide a centre of expertise for subsea activities and marine operations.


Our operations are varied and include salvage assistance to damaged surface vessels, location of aircraft on the sea-bottom, survey of WWII wrecks, towage of warships and submarines, emergency response preparedness exercises and underwater engineering supportto resolve defects on Navy platforms at home and overseas.

We will provide you with the necessary training and help you on your journey to becoming an experienced Health and Safety Advisor.

Please note the role may require occasional overseas travel.


Please be advised that, the successful applicant will be required to undertake Developed Vetting (DV) clearance once in the post.


About the role
As Health and Safety Advisor your main responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Supporting the development and maintenance of the SALMO management systems for safety, health and environmental protection and quality management.
  • Work as part of a team that has responsibility for providing support to the operational delivery.
  • Assist in developing & maintaining the SALMO health and safety and environmental management systems (SEMS) in accordance with statutory and MoD requirements.
  • Conduct reviews, investigation, and internal audits for compliance related purposes.
  • Manage enquiries and act as focal point on health and safety matters, providing advice to stakeholders across the business.
  • Provide metrics for performance reporting (KPIs and BPIs) and manage dashboard reporting and risk registers.
  • Assist in the development of corporate communications in relation to health and safety messages at the site.
  • Support the Head of Establishment at the site to ensure the site is safe to operate
  • Hold as a minimum NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Relevant experience in a complex organisation

It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:

  • Lead Auditor Certificate (Quality, Safety or Environment)
  • Demonstrate an awareness/appreciation of equipment safety management

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
