The Pharmacy Technical Services Department have a vacancy for a Band 2-3 progression Pharmacy Technical Services Assistant to work within our unit.

Working in our specialist facility you will be part of a dedicated team preparing vital medicines for our patients.

You will assist in the preparation of injectable medicines such as chemotherapy, intravenous nutrition and other life-saving therapies for our patients.

You will also learn new skills giving you the opportunity to progress a career in the science and manufacturing field.

Bank Holiday working on rotation is required as is occasional weekend working.


This is a full-time post working 37.5 hours per week but part-time hours and flexible working requests will be considered.


Under the direction of senior staff act as a validated dispenser for the manufacture of a range of sterile injectable medicines which will include hazardous products such as cancer chemotherapy agents or radioactive materials, and less hazardous products such as nutrition and aseptic medicines.

These medicines must be appropriately labelled for individual patients with advice and instructions for storage and use.

This will require moderate effort in a restrictive sitting or standing position, often for prolonged periods, whilst maintaining high levels of concentration and accuracy during preparation of injections, using isolator barrier technology.

Sustainability is integral to the Trust achieving the NHS Net Zero target. All staff are therefore actively encouraged and supported to implement new ways of working within their field of expertise.


Under the guidance of the Lead or Senior Technicians act as a supervisor and mentor to other pharmacy staff, including trainees, working within Technical Services covering the day-to-day activities in support of the daily manufacturing requirements of the Technical Services unit.


Participate in the daily, weekly, monthly or six monthly cleaning activities associated with maintaining the unit to strict Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines.

Accurate prescription and worksheet data inputting

  • Accurately dispense medicines, ensuring the correct medicines are dispensed to the correct patients and booked out to the correct ward using the electronic stock control and labelling system(s).


Under the direction of the Lead or Senior Technicians' support the training of assistants and new members of staff as they rotate through the different production areas to a level where those staff are ready for assessment.

Support transport/distribution of stock and stock control/storeroom duties. This includes checking stock is in date and appropriately stored.

Participate in the Bank Holiday service, on rotation and weekend working as required.

Actively contribute suggestions for improvement to working practice as necessary.

Demonstrate competence by maintaining own training and reading records.

Maintain concentration for prolonged periods whilst preparing doses of medicines.


Maintain the requirements of health and safety in the workplace ensuring the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) the adherence to procedures and the use of approved practices relating to manual handling.


As determined by the Lead Technicians supervise occasional visitors to the department, ensuring security, safety, and confidentiality is maintained at all times during the visit.


Read, understand and adhere to pharmacy standard operating procedures and provide comment to the author where improvements could be made.


The post holder must have well developed interpersonal and communication skills, covering written and verbal information, provided to and received from a diverse range of people of different levels of knowledge and understanding.

The range of people communicated with may include patients, carers, other healthcare professionals and colleagues. All communication will be delivered effectively in a professional manner.

The ability to deal with routine enquiries requiring judgements involving straightforward facts or situations.


Ability to deal with challenging phone calls and enquiries from service users, occasionally in emotional circumstancesAttention to detail and need for high levels of concentration for extended periods of time.

Working in an aseptic environment and the constraints this brings.

This includes sitting in a restrictive position for periods of time at the pharmacy isolator when manufacturing chemotherapy and other aseptic items.

It can also include repetitive lifting of packs/boxes/ movement of pharmaceutical goods.

Successfully maintaining workflows in line with service requirements to specific deadlines in support of patient needs.

Adapting to continually changing needs by demonstrating a flexible approach to service requirements

Producing consistently accurate work in a timely manner when under pressure

Working with cytotoxic and radioactive medicines on a daily basis.
