The role of Medical Examiner Officer is anticipated to be hugely rewarding and will improve your personal skills.

Your role will be to support the Senior lead /Lead Medical Examiner Officer in the daily operational activity of the Medical Examiner service.

You will work in partnership with the Mortuary, Bereavement Service, on site Coroners officers, Registrars, local spiritual/faith representatives & funeral services to provide streamlined services for bereaved families.


You will also work with the Palliative Care team and support the End of Life Care Strategy where this relates to the Medical Examiner Service, and be a central point of contact for the relatives of deceased patients, coordinating communications with other services and providing a seamless and compassionate experience for the bereaved.

This role will incorporate administrative skills in ensuring necessary paperwork is accurate and complete, but also excellent communication skills during liaison with doctors, nurses, families, and where appropriate, the Coroners' services.


Part of the day-to-day work will also involve investigation work and perusal of patient notes and running a daily mortality review process, so a good working knowledge of medical terminology is important together with relevant clinical experience in an acute hospital setting.


Through delegated responsibility you will scrutinise the patient record and prioritise cases of concern or those for potential Serious Investigation or Coronial investigation to the Medical Examiner.

With delegated responsibility from the Lead MEO, to refer mandatory cases for SJR Mortality Review and also an additional minimum of 20% of cases per speciality.

You will work within the service policies, guidelines and protocols for the medical examiner function.

To support the Lead MEO in monitoring performance and developing assurance reports for relevant internal and external stakeholders as required.

Review the services provided with the Lead MEO and make suggestions for continual improvement.

  • The Medical Examiner Officer (MEO) role is to support the senior Lead / lead
Medical Examiner Officer in the daily operational activity of the
Medical Examiner (ME) service

  • Work in partnership with the Mortuary, Bereavement Service, on
site Coroners officers, Registrars, local spiritual/faith

  • To Liaise with the Palliative Care team and work within the End of

  • Listens to relatives concerns and take action to address these
and any pre/informal/formal complaints.
