As the Head of Digital Trading, you're accountable for owning and driving the performance, and growth of your trading categories across digital channels (predominantly ).

Through exceptional team leadership, leveraging data, insights you'll define conversion driving strategies and best-in-class digital customer experiences.


This role balances the strategic requirements of the function alongside the day-to-day requirements of leading a large Digital Trading team within a fast-paced, highly seasonal organisation whilst managing effective relationships with many critical stakeholders from around the organisation.


The dynamic and fast-moving nature of this role will require confidence, resilience, and sound commercial judgement to prioritise and deal effectively with fast changing scenarios and opportunities.

The role holder will utilise their significant influence and collaboration skills to ensure our maximum potential is achieved through their own team plus our principal business partners in the Commercial, Product (Tech) & Marketing divisions.


What you need to do

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive digital strategy across your categories of responsibility, driving improvements in digital revenue growth and participation improvements in line with business targets for your trading division(s)
  • Ensure your team are utilising all the tools and insights available to them to drive the digital metrics to hit the associated commercial targets and seek new ways of identifying performance enhancing opportunities
  • Develop a continuous improvement culture to improve efficiencies, define new best practices and explore through a programme of "test and learn" activities
  • Set content and merchandising tenets and strategies that deliver quantifiable improvements to digital metrics
  • Ensure strong communication and ways of working and ongoing alignment with the Commercial Trading teams and Digital Marketing teams. To include significant budgeting and forecasting activity.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Product teams to enhance customer experience, ensuring the associated investment programme delivers for our Digital Trading strategy and ambition
  • Monitor and understand the competitive landscape and its impact and influence on our strategy
  • Lead, coach & develop the team setting them measurable performance goals and ensuring they understand how they fit into the overall digital strategy
  • Ensure appropriate training needs are identified and address and create a pipeline of great talent and succession across your team and the wider eCommerce Trading team
  • Ensure the performance narrative for Digital Trading is clearly articulated
  • Work closely with Design & Content and SEO teams to ensure that our content remains highly relevant and optimised and that we are proactively refreshing and creating new content that drives both visit numbers and customer engagement levels
  • Ensure that across your team there are high levels of competitor awareness with metrics and insights relating to visit share, promotional activity and customer experience enhancements regularly monitored and communicated across both category and digital teams.
  • Stay close to best in class ecommerce practices and utilise a strong external network to ensure our ecommerce strategy is developing at appropriate pace.
  • Lead, coach & develop the team ensuring they understand the overall digital strategy along with their part in achieving the strategy. Ensure targets are clear and reporting against these targets is consistent.
  • Ensure appropriate training needs are identified and address and create a pipeline of great talent and succession across your team and the wider eCommerce Trading team
  • You will build strong relationships with strategic suppliers and will engage directly with senior digital colleagues within these organisations to ensure we maximise our potential with these brands (in close collaboration with Commercial and Nectar360)

What you need to know and show

  • You are passionate and enthusiastic about ecommerce within retail. You are likely to have 5 years of experience within an online retail environment
  • You'll drive a 'digital mindset' shift across the organisation, engaging your team, and the commercial functions you'll work closely with.
  • You have an aptitude for using and interpreting data to make strategic recommendations for your categories (Adobe analytics, SimilarWeb, Glassbox etc)
  • You will have an active and thorough understanding of digital merchandising principles and tools.
  • You will be a confident decision maker and use sound commercial judgement, to prioritise, communicate and deal effectively with fast changing scenarios.
  • You are great at building strong relationships with key stakeholders outside your division and influencing outcomes for your unit.
