Company description:
We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.

Job description:
The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team with Prof David Werner on the Reece Foundation funded project "Cleaning up the Ouseburn", within the School of Engineering.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled technician to join in a new project to conduct fieldwork on river health using state-of-the-art methods for the analysis of environmental DNA, including nanopore sequencing.

The aim of the project is to develop innovative methods for studying the impact of pollution on river ecology.

You will have the opportunity to work with diverse internal and external stakeholders via the charity-funded £1 million "Ouse Burn Way" initiative and the Ouseburn catchment partnership.

You will gain valuable experience in providing scientific evidence that supports a national agenda to restore England's rivers to good ecological status.

We are extremely keen to hear from people with a can-do attitude, who are adaptable and offer creative support and ideas to this research project.

The ideal candidate will have experience with conventional water testing methods and using molecular microbiology methods like qPCR and sequencing, preferably with practical knowledge of the nanopore sequencing technology.

Working experience in a microbiology laboratory is required to be successful in this role with some experience of data processing using statistical and bioinformatic methods.

You will need to work in an organised, systematic, and safe way, both in the field and in a laboratory.

Therefore, being able to demonstrate your knowledge and practice of Health & Safety legislation is key.

As the opportunity includes fieldwork, we would require you to have a driving licence so that you can drive our university vehicles.

The role will be full time for a period of 1 year initially, with the possibility of extending.

Please contact Prof David Werner at to find out more about this opportunity.
