Job summary

Thisrole provides all aspects of orthoptic care to the community of County Durham.The postholder will be involved with managing their own caseload of adult andpaediatric patients. There is involvement in multidisciplinary clinics workingin a Orthoptic and optometry clinic to manage patients both new and review andthe ability to be involved with Paediatric and adult ocular motlity clinicworking directly with the paediatric Consultant ophthalmologist. There is alsothe ability to undertake secondaryscreening in main and secondary sites. Although the base for this roleis University Hospital of North Durham there will be travel to other siteswithin the Trust to provide clinics closer to home for patients and work inother main sites. This is a excellent opportunity to work with patients of allages and abilities in different clinic settings and types We would be willingto support a newly qualified Orthoptist to take up this role.

Main duties of the job

All aspects of both paediatric andadult orthoptic assessments and management including secondary screening andpre-op and post-op assessments for strabismus / ocular motility.

Manage own clinical workload.

Multidisciplinary working withOptometrists and Consulatnt Ophthalmologists

Support for student orthoptists and Optometristsin their clinical placements

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will need to travel to sites other than their nominal base to undertakethese clinics. There will be a need to perform Orthoptic pre-operative andpost-operative assessments for both paediatric and adults cases. As the nominalbase for this role has an urgent eye care clinic on site it will be necessaryto perform orthoptic assessments for urgent patients from this clinic to aidwith diagnosis and symptom management.

Essential

Experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics including specialist services ideally Paediatrics, Neurology, Community services, adjustable suture squint surgery

Desirable

Experience of Goldmann visual field testing Experience of clinical teaching ideally including Orthoptic undergraduates

Qualifications

Diploma/degree in Orthoptics

Clinical teachers qualification
