Head of Modern Foreign Languages

Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom Teacheroo Full time
Job Introduction

Modern Foreign Languages at Hutchesons' are taught by specialist teachers in the primary and senior schools.

In the primary school, the emphasis is on exposure to a variety of languages, making connections with language that younger learners already know and encouraging engagement through topics appropriate to age and stage.

In Secondary 1, pupils have the choice of learning French, German, or Spanish, with the possibility of adding a second of these languages in S3.

All S1 and S2 pupils are taught Latin by the Classics Department.

At the end of S4, most pupils are presented for National 5, with a good number continuing to Higher in S5.

In S6, in addition to continuing the chosen language(s) to Advanced Higher, pupils have the opportunity of choosing Italian. All four languages are offered to Advanced Higher level.

Currently the S1-S4 courses are Studio, Stimmt and Viva, with access to Active teaching and learning materials.

The department also has subscriptions for Language Gym, Linguascope, À Tantôt and Español Extra and access to bookable labs for full classes.

We are fortunate to have regular input from native level speakers, who share knowledge of their culture and give an authenticity to language-learning.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department classrooms in the senior school are located in the main building at the Beaton Road site, with most teachers of Modern Languages having their own classrooms with storage space.

Each of the eleven members of the department is qualified to teach at least two Modern Foreign Languages.

The department has a considerable reputation for academic achievement in national exams.

All Heads of Department are expected to play a full part in working alongside senior colleagues in the development of the academic planning and improvement of the school, representing whole school goals to members of the department.

Involvement in the cocurricular life of the school is expected.

To comply with regulations under The Education (Scotland) Act 2016, all teachers who commence employment at any Scottish Independent School on or after 1 October 2017 must be registered, or eligible to register, with the General Teaching Council of Scotland (GTCS); either Provisional, Provisional (Conditional) or Full.

Further information can be obtained from the GTCS website.

Main Responsibilities

Please see attached Job Description

The ability to teach Advanced Higher in at least one language is essential, as is the zeal to promote Languages beyond the confines of the classroom.

They will have a clear vision for the development of the department and the communication skills to articulate that vision.

Strong interpersonal skills to engage, inspire and support pupils and colleagues are vital.

About the school/organisation

Hutchesons' Grammar School aims to provide boys and girls with a broad Scottish education, with the emphasis on academic excellence.

Founded in 1641, Hutchesons' is a famous school which has always been at the forefront of teaching and learning in Scotland.

Nowadays, it is a large and dynamic school of great vitality and diversity, where around 1,250 pupils from Pre-School right through to S6 follow a broad curriculum, blending the traditional and the modern.

Experienced teachers are one of Hutchesons' greatest strengths, along with the resources they need to do their job to the highest possible standards.

Hutchesons' pupils excel in a wide variety of sports both nationally and internationally, and the quality of performance in music, drama and the arts is equally high.

All pupils can follow a structured programme in and out of the classroom which broadens their outlook and helps them develop their interests and enthusiasms.

There are many opportunities for involvement in clubs and societies, community work and charity fund-raising, visits and tours both within the UK and abroad, and for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

As individuals, Hutchesons' pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, self-discipline, integrity, courtesy and consideration for others. They are part of a large community of learners, where every individual is important.

They learn to be thoughtful, articulate and well-read and to have a clear idea about how they want to live their lives beyond school and university.

Scots have always valued education very highly, and for nearly four centuries Hutchesons' has sent young men and women out into the world secure in the knowledge that they are part of that tradition.
