Pontus Research Ltd. is a fully independent Research and Development (R&D) service provider, offering high quality professional in-vivo R&D services to the aquaculture, marine and aquatics sectors. The company was founded in 2014 in the UK and operates 10 research systems and a feed mill in Wales, with a sister company Singapore business formed in 2020 to service the Asian market.

We are looking for an ambitious Aquaculture Research Technician to help us deliver quality research for our clients; you will be self motivated, able to work effectively with limited supervision, and have an inquisitive attitude. You will be comfortable looking after fish – feeding, cleaning, maintaining water quality, observing – and you will also be competent in scientific methods – data collection, data entry, statistical analysis. You will be based at our facility in Hirwaun, near Aberdare, Wales and will need to be able to access the facility in 15 minutes or less, and will report to the Project Coordinator. You will be part of a small team offering trials in species such as salmon, trout, carp and tilapia.

Key duties

  • Day to day husbandry of trial animals.
  • Measure and record system parameters (water chemistry, physical parameters etc.).
  • Collect and record data from weighing, feeding, etc.
  • Collect physical samples, process for analysis, collate the resulting data from the labs.
  • Work with the Research Team Leader, Project Coordinator to enter, manipulate and analyse data, prepare reports, etc.
  • Identify issues with systems, processes or livestock and help to come up with and deliver solutions.

Essential skills/experience:

  • A working knowledge and/or keen interest in fishkeeping/aquaculture/aquatic or marine research.
  • A willingness to learn quickly and take instruction constructively.
  • Understanding of basic requirements for good biosecurity.
  • Understanding of basic fish biology and requirements for animal welfare.
  • An appreciation for the requirements of good scientific research and data collection with living organisms.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (English).
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Current clean driving license and access to own transport.
  • Willingness to work weekends and bank holidays on a rota system.

Desired skills/experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in fish biology, aquaculture, or related discipline.
  • Previous experience working in a research laboratory.
  • Postgraduate in fish biology, aquaculture, or related discipline.
  • Previous experience working in an aquaculture research setting - health or nutrition.
  • Experience with working with species such as salmon, trout, carp and tilapia.
  • Experience in advanced fishkeeping and/or practical aquaculture.
  • Experience in collecting, recording and analysing scientific data.
  • Understanding of water chemistry and its impact on aquatic animals.
  • Statistical analysis using SPSS or R.
