An exciting and new opportunity has arisen for the role of Archivist/ Historical Collections Officer with the Society of Dyers and Colourists,
the world's leading independent, educational charity dedicated to advancing the science and technology of colour worldwide, to catalogue and enable our vast and diverse archive collection to be available to the public and other interested parties

Based in Bradford, the role is part-time, 21 hours per week, to be worked flexibly over 3 days and for a fixed term period of 12 months in duration.

Offering a salary of £15,000 per annum (full-time equivalent £25,000) + benefits, including Pension, Life Assurance, generous holidays (full-time equivalent of 33 days, inclusive of bank holidays) with optional healthcare benefits and free on-site parking


You will be a qualified archivist, leading on an exciting project to collate an archive relating to têxtiles and coloration.

You will develop the collections care, archiving and accessibility as well as implementing a volunteer programme, and managing the volunteer team accordingly.

There will also be a requirement to work with other existing projects and collections/archives in the têxtile field and further develop existing relationships in relation to these.

The SDC archive is both extensive and eclectic, formed from donations made as well as internal collections.

From fabric and print samples to dye samples and books and journals the archive was once catalogued (paper copies) and needs to be archived again, to include new additions.


Reporting to the Technical Director, key responsibilities will include to:

  • Arrange, describe and catalogue digital resources in the archive, ensuring they are in line with appropriate standards
  • Undertake research to inform cataloguing, the preparation of collection summaries, provenance and rights clarification
  • Promote and encourage use of the historical collection
  • Develop archive policies, procedures, reports and operational planning in line with appropriate international archive standards
  • Develop the delivery of historical collection enquiry services
  • Develop with the SDC a collections forward plan to include collaborations on research, special initiatives, lectures and exhibitions and other activities
  • Proactively maximise engagement opportunities
  • Develop and supervise a volunteer programme and members of staff undertaking work in the historical collection
  • Assist with project planning, assembling performance indicators and preparing reports


To be successful in the role you will have collections management experience and be educated to degree level with a qualification in historical collections and records management or a related, ideally Postgraduate, qualification in historical collections and/or records management (ARA accredited).


Further skills required are:

  • Project management skills
  • Development and delivery of learning programmes
  • Microsoft office suite; Excel, Word & ideally Google suite
  • Methodical and thorough, with strong attention to detail
  • Effective interpersonal skills and strong communication talent, with a specific ability to liaise with varied stakeholders at all levels, and with a wide range of users
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and delegate work

It would also be advantageous if you have experience in the implementation of a volunteer programme, and/or an interest and knowledge of têxtiles, design and science-based collections and digitisation skills, especially in scanning/photographic software
