Job summary

Hello my name is Shirley Fox, Oncology and Haematology Matron at Salisbury. Our Haematology services are based on the Pembroke Unit at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. Pembroke Unit provides a service for haematology patients undergoing investigations, Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment, stem cell transplantation, palliative care and supportive therapies. The unit comprises the Pembroke Suite (day unit & outpatients) which has 10 treatment spaces and Pembroke Ward, which has 10 beds including 4 side rooms for isolation. Inpatients on Pembroke Ward will include patients under the care of the Haematologists. Nursing staff rotate between these two areas, fostering closer working relationships and building on existing skills and knowledge.

The post holder will act as the key worker for haematology patients from investigation to initial diagnosis and throughout the whole journey to ensure coordination and continuity of care. The post holder will liaise with all members of the multi- disciplinary team, including members of the Primary Health Care Team, to provide specialist nursing knowledge and expertise on all aspects of haematology care. To support the stratified pathway for patients with benign and malignant haematological disease.

Main duties of the job

Your key responsibility is to provide excellent clinical care & holistic support to patients and those affected by cancer at all stages of their cancer pathway from referral through to the process of investigation to treatment and beyond. You will facilitate & co-ordinate care across the wider multi-disciplinary team ensuring clear communication with patients, their relatives & other healthcare professionals.

You will be the person who is an accessible member of the MDT, taking a key role in co-ordinating the patient's care and promoting continuity, ensuring the patient knows who to access for information and advice. You be present at diagnosis and for treatment planning, acting as the patients advocate.

Clinically you will be an independent practitioner with opportunities to provide nurse led clinics consenting and assessing fitness for further treatment. perform bone marrows, insert PICC lines and perform Apheresis.

In your role you will promote and provide personalised care interventions for patients and those affected by cancer on your caseload.

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

Registered adult nurse with significant, relevant experience as a band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist. Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Post registration qualification appropriate to speciality. First level degree/masters in related subject or relevant experience. Evidence of continued professional development. Recognised teaching qualification Advanced Communication Skills qualification. Psychological Level 2 qualification. Good Clinical Practice Health couching qualification History Taking and Physical Examination or willingness to undertake

Desirable

Masters level qualification or willingness to undertake. Non-Medical Prescribing Regulation (IRMER) training

Experience

Essential

Evidence of relevant clinical experience at Band 6 preferably in an Oncology or Haematology. Haematology site specific education or module. Highly skilled clinical practice. within Haematology/Oncology Working knowledge of primary care, team nursing and reflective practice. Experience of multi-professional working. Previous experience of working as a clinical nurse specialist. Able to manage a caseload. Previous experience of teaching, using a wide variety of resources. Evidence of advanced communication skills. Demonstrates evidence of commitment to professional development. Demonstrates ability to lead on undertaking and using audit to improve quality. Ability to facilitate in group settings with patients or other health professionals. Lead in developing guidelines/policies/pathways. Able to appraise junior colleagues.

Desirable

Experience of working within a B7 role.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

In depth knowledge of Haematological malignancies and their management. Proven ability to lead change. Ability to develop new ways of working. Thorough up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice particularly within the speciality area. Demonstrates knowledge of cancer pathways and targets and an understanding of PTL management. Understanding of equality and diversity and how to apply to self and others. Able to prioritise own workload appropriately and work efficiently under pressure. Able to work within the boundaries of the role. Demonstrates effective working within an MDT. Demonstrates awareness of research based practice and how to apply it. Able to act as advocate to service users. Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of commonly used IT systems. Ability to work autonomously, but also as part of a team. Ability to share specialist knowledge in both primary and secondary settings. Committed to speciality and able to motivate others within the area
