Counsellor for Integrated Sexual Health

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Integrated Sexual Health Services for a Counsellor to join the team. You will be working alongside an excellent, established multidisciplinary sexual health team to provide a counselling service to our service users on the Sexual Health Pathway, including those living with HIV.

The overriding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement

Main duties of the job The post holder will provide care for citizens on the Sexual Health Pathway, including those living with HIV. The post holder will be expected to:-
  • Provide brief counselling services in the form of one-to-one support for individuals requiring advice and support about their sexual well-being.
  • Provide support around risk taking sexual behaviour, sexual and gender identity enabling citizens to make safer informed choices and improve psychological wellbeing.
  • One-to-one interventions to reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted infections including HIV especially among vulnerable, at risk groups and particularly those with severe multiple disadvantage.
  • Facilitate onward referrals to main-stream mental health services and psychosexual services as appropriate.

  • Knowledge of counselling, including a range of counselling procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge about barriers to understanding and how to address these.
  • Can demonstrate ability to put knowledge into practice
Desirable
  • Knowledge of HIV transmission, testing procedures, pre and post-test counselling.
Qualifications Essential
  • Professional diploma, advanced diploma/accreditation in counselling or further substantial training and accredited clinical supervision plus experience
  • Registration with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
Desirable
  • Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Foundation Level 1 course
Further Training Essential
  • Able to elicit and communicate sensitive information.
  • Able to assess clients and select appropriate therapeutic treatment
  • Demonstrate ability in managing a client caseload, including referrals to specialist services
  • Provision of specialist support and education to staff
  • Able to perform basic psychometric testing
  • Able to undertake surveys and audits.
Desirable
  • Experience in providing counselling to individuals with high sexual risk
  • Experience in providing counselling to people living with HIV (PLWH)
  • Clinical governance experience
  • Research and development experience
Contractual Essential
  • Work within ISHS/Trust policies and BACP code of ethics
  • Participate in appraisal and re-accreditation
  • Undertake mandatory training
  • Provide face to face and virtual counselling options at various locations.
  • Possess a full driving licence with use of a car.
  • Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service
Further Training Essential
  • Undertake continuing professional development to maintain BACP registration.
  • Access regular supervision to support clinical practice in line with professional standards.
Desirable
  • Additional safeguarding training
