About the role


As the History Faculty's first point of contact for all research funding queries, you will provide one-to-one support for academic colleagues (from post-doctoral researchers to senior academic staff); work with Faculty Officers on appropriate monitoring strategies and report on current research funding activities; liaise with the University's Research Accounts and other central finance teams to ensure all appropriate procedures are followed; and work with other Finance Officers across the Humanities Division and beyond to support interdisciplinary collaborations and activities.

The post holder will provide advice and support to the Finance Manager, HAF, the Faculty Board Chair, the Faculty Board and senior academics involved in research grant management.


Supported by the Finance Manager, the postholder would be charged with managing the financial control of research grants and bringing their financial reporting and planning into line with the rest of the Faculty and the division.

This post would provide the capacity required to develop bespoke models/tools which will be key for the effective financial management, planning and reporting of research projects.

The person in this role will play a key role in preparing budgets and forecasts, for internal and external stakeholders.

The post holder will ensure that all activities adhere to the University's financial and personnel regulations and statutory legislation as appropriate.

In addition, the Finance Officer (Research) is expected to be involved in discrete project work both in the faculty and across the division where financial input and/or data analysis is a key component.


The postholder will report to the Faculty Finance Manager and also be a member of the Humanities Division Finance Team benefiting from a full programme of training and professional development.


  • This is a fulltime (37.5 hours per week), permanent post. Parttime hours will be considered (minimum 22.5 hours per week, 60% of fulltime hours)._

About you


You will be AAT qualified, or hold professional exemptions through related or higher qualifications, for example CIMA, ACCA or a degree in finance or related discipline.

You will have significant relevant experience of financial administration, including budget management and forecasting as well as experience of using complex financial software packages, and project accounting.

Experience of research grant management, including full economic costing (FEC), is desirable.

You will also have experience of preparing financial management reports, implementing financial controls and audit procedures.


You will possess accomplished IT skills, including in-depth knowledge of spreadsheets, database and word-processing, with the proven ability to manipulate complex financial information.

Experience of Oracle Financials or a similar corporate financial system is desirable.


You will need excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complicated financial concepts to people without a financial background, and to gain the confidence of academic and administrative staff at all levels.
