The Role

Stroke is in the NHS England Long Term Plan and the charity has made huge progress in both acute and post-acute stroke care over the past few years across the UK, however there is still much to do.

As the health and care system continues to recover from Covid, many of the key metrics in stroke are remaining stagnant or indeed going backwards.

Thrombectomy, a game-changing stroke treatment, is still not available to the majority of patients who need one and we are far below the 10% target in the NHS England LTP.

Pressures in urgent and emergency care, NHS workforce pressures, and access to rehabilitation and life after stroke support, are all impacting stroke patients and their abilities to rebuild their life after stroke.

The Head of Policy and Influencing is a key role within the organisation leading our response to these system-wide issues through our policy, public affairs and campaigning work.

The role is responsible for ensuring the development and use of policy and influencing products to drive improvements in stroke prevention, treatment and care.

The current priority areas include campaigning for access to thrombectomy, supporting delivery of national stroke delivery plans, calling for access to comprehensive rehabilitation, and life after stroke support through universal access to a stroke key worker.

The Head of Policy and Influencing will have a key role in horizon scanning the changing external environment, providing strategic policy analysis and advice to senior leaders and ensuring the organisation is equipped to capitalise on opportunities to influence legislation and policy in line with our strategic goals.

You will oversee the delivery of effective public affairs and engagement with key political and national-level NHS stakeholders, building and maintaining relationships to secure stakeholder support to ensure our influencing strategies are successful.

The role is also responsible for overseeing our campaigning work, supporting the team to grow and engage our campaigner base, and ensuring our campaigning activity is authentic and impactful, with people affected by stroke at the centre.

The role works closely with the Chief Executive and Associate Director for Systems Engagement and has a strong externally-facing component.

The Head of Policy and Influencing ensures that we have excellent relationships with key stakeholders and partners including with NHS England, Department for Health and Social Care, politicians, and other charities and external coalitions.

They act as an effective and engaging spokesperson for the Association at external events, meetings and in the media.

About You

You will have experience of:

  • Working as a senior manager in policy, advocacy or campaigning
  • Developing and implementing effective, evidencebased influencing strategies
  • Leading and delivering nationallevel policy initiatives
  • Developing publicfacing advocacy campaigns
  • Providing expert strategic policy and influencing advice across a large organisation
To fulfil the role you must be resident in the UK and have the right to work in the UK

Please submit your CV and a supporting statement of no more than two pages demonstrating how you meet the person specification and what you bring to the role in terms of your skills and experience.

Please state any preferences for flexible options in your covering letter. Applications from individuals who are seeking flexible working options, including reduced hours or job shares are welcomed.

About the Organisation

That's because a stroke happens in the brain, the control centre for who we are and what we can do.

It happens every five minutes in the UK and changes lives instantly.

Recovery is tough, but with the right specialist support and a ton of courage and determination, the brain can adapt.

Everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke. And it's a team effort t
