Job summary

This is an amazing opportunity for an aspiring Director of Nursing, it will give the candidate a unique opportunity to work directly with the Trusts Executive Leadership team and the Trust Board.

They will work with different systems across South West London (ICB and SLP) to enhance care for our communities. They will lead on the education and professional development of the nursing workforce and support the recruitment and retention of staff.

Main duties of the job

They will deputise for the Chief Nurse portfolio and provide strategic nursing input across the trust, ensuring appropriate advice is provided to ensure the consistent delivery of safe, effective, recovery focused mental health services.

They will be responsible for ensuring Quality Improvement is embedded throughout all aspects of service improvement and programmes of work and provides high quality reports to Board, and that reducing health inequalities and racism are embedded in all aspects of improving clinical care and patient experience.

They will work closely with service users and carers to ensure that practice supports recovery by helping the service user to achieve the best quality of life possible whilst living with ongoing symptoms. To ensure they are consistently acting and learning from feedback from the people who use our services.

They will work closely with a range of senior clinicians and professionals to ensure the clinical staff have the skills and competencies to provide high quality and safe care to all patients, and that they can mentor and develop students and junior staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

To deputise for the Chief Nurse portfolio as required. To provide strategic nursing input across the trust, ensuring appropriate advice is provided toensure the consistent delivery of safe, effective, recovery focused mental health services. To provide professional leadership and direction to all senior nurse leaders and otherprofessionals delivering patient care in relation to evidence based mental health practice, and to represent the views of nurses in trust-wide governance forums. To ensure Quality Improvement is embedded throughout all aspects of service improvement and programmes of work and provides high quality reports to Board. That reducing health inequalities and racism are embedded in all aspects of improving clinical care and patient experience. To ensure that high standards of physical and mental health care are embedded across all clinical services, and that the Fundamental Standards of Care (FSoC) are a priority in delivering the these standards. To practice in a way that supports recovery by helping the service user to achieve the best quality of life possible whilst living with ongoing symptoms. To help people by encouraging them to think about their strengths and abilities and the changes they can make in their lives to take control, reach their goals and achieve improved mental wellbeing. To take a leadership role in ensuring the services practice in a recovery orientated manner. To contribute to trust wide nursing developments and the development and implementation of the nursingframework, monitoring and evaluating progress. Report progress to the Chief Nurse through the nursing governance structures and other governance arrangements on a regular basis. To provide clinical and professional supervision to senior nurses ensuring that standards ofnursing advice are consistent, and that nursing developments are in accordance with the trust strategy and objectives. To provide advice and support on revalidation as required. To conduct disciplinary and service investigations as requested by the Chief Nurse, and to advise senior managers in disciplinary hearings and to fulfil the role of nurse adviser to investigatory panels for the Trust. To work in close collaboration with Heads of Profession, and external agencies, contributing to theplanning and delivery of high quality mental health services locally. To contribute to the development of the most effective care pathways for service users throughcollaboration with other professionals and key stakeholders, which are in line with the Trust vision and agreed models of care delivery. To develop nurse-led initiatives regarding care improvement programs, which incorporate the post holders higher level of practice, advancing nursing practice and opportunities for patientstreatment, intervention and mental health and physical care needs providing / accessing specialist nursing advice and input. To work with the other Heads of Nursing to ensure that all services have an evidencebased model of nursing care delivery, that nursing staff understand their roles and inputs in relation to this, and that a system of agreed quality metrics is used to demonstrate efficacy of care delivery. To ensure that standards and systems for maintaining high quality infection control andenvironmental cleanliness are in place and are being regularly audited. To work closely with the senior professionals in Estates and Facilities to provide assurance thatcapital projects ( ligature reduction works) and soft facilities (cleaning, catering) are delivering to the required standards. To ensure all staff are skilled and competent in providing the right standards of physical health care for our patients and can identify and manage long term conditions. To have the responsibility for the reporting on safer staffing with the Heads of Nursing across all Service lines. To ensure that all aspects of the CQC regulatory requirements are in place across all clinical services, and are responsible for ensuring that all outcomes from inspections are addressed.

Nursing Development

To ensure that personal development plans and objectives are developed & implemented for staff To promote professional standards that are implemented for nurses based on the NMC Code ofConduct. To participate in the management of issues arising from professional registration. To enable leadership development to support Senior Nurse Leaders tochallenge poor practice while motivating, inspiring and role modeling best practice. To act as a role model, exhibiting high levels of professional behaviour at all times including having the level of knowledge, skills and confidence to provide the right advice on patient care and safety. To monitor nurse staffing levels and vacancies and keep track of issues relating to the nursingworkforce and recruitment to ensure variance affecting quality nursing standards in relation to skills and capacity to meet the needs of the service users is reported to the Chief Nurse.

Practice and Research

To ensure that processes are in place across the trust for the delivery of holistic care and contemporary developments in nursing practice. To be responsible for the development of the knowledge base of mental health nursing through audit, practice development, and research activities, and to encourage nurses to do the same, ensuring they are supported to disseminate their work locally and at national and international forums. To work together with other professionals to develop an organisational culture that ensures effective clinical care, stimulates innovation and change through critical appraisal, research and practice development. To commission research from Universities, acting as link between the Trust and Universities ensuring that the values of the Trust and the nursing strategy can be achieved at both post graduate level and clinical education programmes To provide a nursing perspective in the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical policies, ensuring that they are fair and equitable, support the needs of service users, and are in line with Trust objectives.

Service Improvement

To contribute to workforce development at a Trust-wide level and work with other Heads of Nursing to ensure that workforce needs are anticipated and planned for and that recruitment activities are undertaken and supported and appropriate steps are taken to address any retention issues To contribute to recruitment and retention initiatives and to communicate the nursing recruitment needs to the Chief Nurse and Chief Operation Officer, to support local managers are able to fill vacancies, or develop alternative plans if recruitment is unsuccessful. To ensure that nurses are deployed to provide high quality, flexible, and cost-effective care, and support service managers to address temporary staffing issues, including spending through working in partnership with those operationally accountable for safer staffing. To actively support nursing career development, ensuring equality of opportunity, and promoting developments in nursing that underpin the delivery of services to service users. To undertake & lead specific improvement and development projects, as directed by the Chief Nurse.

Clinical Governance Responsibilities

To take a leadership role in regard to the trust response and implementation of recommendations from external reviews and inquiries and to share this across Service lines. To work the Associate Director of Governance to monitor the implementation of national standards and compliance with safety guidance and best practice in the in line with Trust Governance requirements, identifying and recording risks on the risk register and taking relevant actions. Facilitate through the service line the implementation of the clinical governance framework to ensure that nursing and other staff practice and develop healthcare governance across all of its key components: Patient Safety Clinical & Cost Effectiveness Patient and Carer Experience Care Environment and Amenities To ensure that nursing staff understand the relevant Trust policies that underpin their practice and that evidence of implementation and audits occur regularly to provide evidence of the same. To ensure that structures are in place to provide assurance for the management of infection control and Health and Safety obligations. To ensure that audits are in place to measure, monitor and develop standards of care and service improvements. To contribute to the establishment and maintenance of performance management and clinical governance mechanisms, in collaboration with Matrons/Managers and professional heads. To work with complaints, incident and Mental Health Act Offices in the Trust to support local implementation of quality improvements and policies, and adherence to Trust procedures. This may include contributing to the training of nursing staff, monitoring the quality of reporting and investigation, and the production of reports for the Trust Management Team. In collaboration with the others ensure learning from complaints and incident reviews influence changes in clinical practice to reduce risk of reoccurrence. To actively participate in the Incident Review structures To work with the executive team and operational managers to ensure that the findings of investigations are considered, and action is taken locally to learn from incidents and complaints.

Education and Development

To undertake Mandatory and Statutory training (MAST) as required by Trust Policy To contribute and commit to undertaking and Performance Appraisal and Development Review (PADR) To undertake personal development as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP) To ensure that all staff directly managed have a personal development plan (PDP) and an annual appraisal (PADR) and ensure that they are compliant again st the Trusts Mandatory and Statutory training (MAST) as required Person Specification

Experience

Essential

oRecent significant experience at a senior level in the NHS with proven track record of using professional knowledge to bring about change oGood knowledge, understanding and experience of leading change through Quality Improvement Innovation. oProven track record and significant experience of working with users and careers oSignificant experience of facilitating and managing change within and across healthcare boundaries oExperience of working across professional boundaries, able to enthuse and inspire others using advanced communication and presentation skills oExperience in a variety of healthcare settings including Forensic oSignificant experience of setting, monitoring and evaluating standards of care oSignificant experience of providing compassionate care for complex populations and those vulnerable to exclusion oExperience of, or awareness of specific factors relating to working in a culturally diverse inner city area oDemonstrable Knowledge and experience of quality governance oExperienced in teaching and developing, as well as training, Nursing staff
