Westminster Academy is an Outstanding International Business and Enterprise Academy serving a multi-ethnic community in central London. Teaching at WA
WA's ethos is committed to developing the best teachers to give our students the best possible education. We aim to use, disseminate and promote a research-led approach to develop classroom practice that enables all students to thrive and make progress. The International Baccalaureate (IB) promotes pedagogies that are student-centred and inquiry-led, and this has inspired our current strategic aims, which are looking to embed and develop these strategies further. To achieve this, we prioritise and devote generous funding to teacher professional learning, both in-house and external, to support our staff at the different stages of their teaching and leadership careers.
Our Expressive Arts department
The Academy delivers six principles of expressive arts as part of a broad and balanced curriculum offer: Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Drama, Media and Food Technology, all of which are studied by all students at KS3. The department takes advantage of exciting local and national opportunities to encourage a passion evoking inquiry and creative expression. Our Expressive Arts teachers and leaders work closely across disciplines to promote inclusion, diversity and a love of the arts, nurturing gifted and talented students via its links with the Bi-borough hubs. We are now seeking an enthusiastic colleague with a second subject to join our dedicated team and help our students realise their creative potential.
Our Art curriculum
Westminster Academy offers Art across KS3, KS4 and KS5. At KS3 we integrate the National Curriculum in lessons and teach a wide variety of mediums, techniques and artists. The GCSE in Art, Craft and Design is offered at KS4, giving students the opportunity to develop practical skills in painting as well as other media. At KS5, the IB Visual Arts course is offered in both the DP and CP programmes. The Art department achieved excellent results in 2022 with a pass rate of 85% at KS4. These results were reflected in KS5 where 100% of students passed. Our Art extra-curricular clubs are extremely popular, and our young artists enjoy collaborating with Dance, Drama, Art and Food students to produce and contribute to showcases and musicals.
