Romford, Greater London, United Kingdom Barking Havering and Redbridge Univ Hospitals NHS Trust Full time

An opportunity has arisen for a part time, highly motivated and enthusiastic Macmillan support worker to join the Enhanced Supportive Care (ESC) Team at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT).

This is an exciting opportunity to join our nationally unique nurse led service that was recognised by NHS England as best practice in cancer care.

BHRUT provides care for a population of approximately 750,000 people across North East London and number is predicted to increase by 15 per cent over the next 10 years.

Our services include all the major specialities of large acute hospitals, operating from 2 main sites

  • King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queens Hospital in Romford. The team covers both sites and the applicant would be expected to be able to access both. The Macmillan support worker will be expected to support patients with metastatic breast cancer, throughout the treatment of disease, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, best supportive care and beyond.

The post holder will assist with the development of the Enhanced Supportive Care approach at Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospital Trust.

The Macmillan Support Worker role is to support patients with a non-curative breast cancer from diagnosis throughout their cancer journey.

The role involves working alongside the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and wider Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). The role consists of communicating with breast cancer patients/relatives face to face, telephone and virtually.

The Macmillan Support Worker must demonstrate a level of skill and understanding which enables them to undertake specific tasks delegated by the CNS or member of the MDT in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies.

Working under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional the role supports people living with non-curative breast cancer.

The aim of this role is to ensure that people living with metastatic breast cancer can access the right support, at the right time.

The support worker can act as a key worker identifying a person's holistic needs, coordinating the persons care and navigating the health and social care system on their behalf.

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs.

More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.

We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford.

We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need.

The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital.

We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.

The Metastatic breast Macmillan support worker has a role in working alongside the oncology multidisciplinary team, including but not exclusive to medical staff, site specific clinical nurse specialists and allied health professionals.

The post holder is expected to complete a holistic needs assessment with patients with non-curative breast cancer to help identify any unmet symptoms, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

The post holder will highlight any clinical concerns to the Clinical nurse specialists for further intervention. They will be expected to create and maintain good links with primary care
- general practice, community palliative care teams, community nursing etc
- to optimise communication and integration and facilitate care in the community setting. The person will work closely with other members of the team. The role comprises of face to face, telephone and virtual clinics both nurse led and jointly with medical colleagues.

For further information on this role, please see the attached detailed Job Description and Person Specification.
