What do our System Architects do?

Systems architecting is the activity of developing, describing, evaluating, and applying systems architectures within systems engineering.

Our System Architects are key to ensuring we deliver all our work in a robust, consistent and cost effective way. Individuals devise systems architectures at enterprise, capability, system and/or engineering solution levels. Alongside their architecture development, they also devise associated system concepts which can be applied and implemented.

The work often entails working in the problem and solution spaces, considering the feasibility of addressing the problem, and achieving a balance between problem and solution considerations. .

Our System Architects are able to devise system architectures that frame stakeholder concerns and meet system requirements, and to express this in a set of consistent views. They are the technical staff who undertake Architecture Definition, with several specialisms e.g. Enterprise Architects, Solution Architects, Data and information Architects. Some Architects tend to specialise in activities such as Architecture Generation, Architecture Description, or Architecture Evaluation.

Work is extremely varied within QinetiQ, you could specialise in a particular domain or work across the business gaining a multitude of experience.

The work may be in direct support of our customer(s), embedded as a Systems Architect within their team; or leading a QinetiQ delivering solutions/products for our customers.

Role specifics

As a System Architect within QinetiQ you may be:
  • Devising systems architectures (and/or related concepts) which capture the problem to be solved and/or essential features (form, structure, characteristics, principles) of the outline solution for simple problems
  • Engaging with customers, other stakeholders, suppliers, other technical disciplines to help develop an appropriate understanding of the problem and to form the bases of viable solutions.
  • Performing one or more of generating, elaborating or evaluating systems architectures for simple systems.
  • Managing a diverse array of stakeholders.
  • Applying systems engineering approaches and architectural methodologies to capture, design and assure customer solutions.
  • Working across complex internal and external team boundaries to solve problems.
  • Presenting technical outputs, appropriate to the audience's knowledge and expertise, in both written and presentational formats.
  • Supporting both bid and project teams in the development of solutions to customer problems.
  • Collaborating across QinetiQ and Customer project teams to enhance the end-solution.
