The Role

The role is funded by the NIHR through ARC NENC as part of an investment in social care.

The post will focus on the following cross-cutting areas:
Improved transitions between services
Understanding service user and carer experiences of social care

The successful applicant will be a current practitioner in social care.

They will join a significant national cohort of social care researchers from across all 15 Applied Research Collaborations. They will also join a vibrant regional community of research fellows within the ARC North East and North Cumbria.


You will be supported by academic mentors from across our six university partners and work closely with our network of fellows.

Our structured mentorship approach enables additional opportunities to work alongside colleagues in research environments and develop your career.

This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service Check.

Fixed term post: 18.5 hours per week, from 1 September March 2026.

Key Accountabilities
Design and deliver applied research projects in the area of children's social care
Undertake literature reviews and relevant research to advance research in children's social care
Engage with the national cohort of ARC Social Care fellows including delivering presentations and developing networks
Engage with the regional ARC Social Care research network and support the social care special interest group
Carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the theme as required
Contribute to the writing of interiM/Final reports, and papers for publication, and disseminate findings at conferences as required
Carry out research within agreed timelines to an appropriate standard
Attend meetings and other events appropriate to the project
Support supervision of undergraduate and Master's student dissertations
Identify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods and other transferable skills as necessary

The Person

You should be a qualified social care practitioner with experience in carrying out applied social care research in practice.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience of working in a social care environment with children and young people
Experience of delivering research in applied social care
Experience of successfully obtaining funding from NIHR or other funding bodies
Evidence of successfully working across several projects or complex project components at one time
Knowledge and experience of leading qualitative and/or quantitative research work or an interest in developing this skill set
An interest in publishing outputs from your work or experience leading peer reviewed publications
Evidence of ability to work independently and co-operatively with others
Experience of collaborative working across multi-professional teams
The ability to communicate well to a wide range of audiences using a range of presentation approaches
Be able to work flexibly with regard to hours of work including occasional evenings, and travel across the region and nationally
To have relevant IT skills
Ability to use initiative, prioritise and show a creative approach to problem solving
Project management experience
Knowledge of health and social care policy relating to health and health inequalities and social care
Desirable
Experience of supervising student projects
Experience of conducting systematic literature reviews
Experience of public involvement and engagement in research
