The service is delivered as a partnership between HIOWAA Charity and University Hospital Southampton.


As part of ongoing development, we are expanding our team of HEMS Doctors, aiming to recruit experienced consultants who are committed to providing the highest standards of clinical care in challenging pre hospital circumstances.

We are seeking applicants who will bring their experience and passion for pre-hospital care to our service.

Based at our airbase in Thruxton, the role is varied and developmental, requiring our clinicans to be collegial and focused on delivering oustanding care as part of a dynamic, experienced team.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Carry out regular clinical shifts with the HEMS Care Group; expected minimum of 3 shifts per month split between the day and late shifts, including weekends and bank holidays. Shifts are and
  • Attend incidents as tasked by the HEMS Desk, working alongside a Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care.
  • Whilst on shift complete daily training scenarios, train and mentor other staff and adhere to the daily base duties SOP and the general daytoday running of the air base and the unit.
  • Actively participate in clinical governance, audit, development, assessment and improvement activities, estimated at 1 day per month (with an expected minimum of 60 hours per year). These activities include (but are not limited to) the organising of activities and presentation of clinical cases.
  • Maintain CPD in prehospital care as per your Consultant duties with regard GMC Good Medical Practice and as required for revalidation
  • Keep up to date with unit specific issues, SOP's, discussions, consultations and guidance at least weekly.
  • Work to relevant guidance, policies and procedures as required by UHS, adhering to national guidelines and acting in accordance with GMC Good Medical Practice recommendations.
  • Complete all unit specific equipment competencies.
  • Contribute to the leadership of the unit, by taking on additional responsibilities from time to time, and be an active follower to support unit leaders and colleagues.
  • Ensure that any concerns / issues / incidents are raised through appropriate pathways to the Medical Lead and Care Group Manager.
  • Work collaboratively with all crew members, charity employees and relevant partners to ensure the highest standards are met, developed and maintained.
  • Uphold and model the highest clinical and professional standards, internally and externally.
  • Act as a role model as a senior medical member of staff to all colleagues both within UHS HEMS Care Group as well as to colleagues from other services (HEMS, Ambulance Service, other emergency services etc)
  • Help to publicly communicate Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance charity's work, its charitable status and the benefits of a critical care model, including public and media appearances if required.
  • Understand, agree to and comply with the UHS Standards for Doctors and Code of Conduct.

Please Note:
All new appointments will be offered on a fixed one-year contract. Following review with the HEMS Medical Lead, these appointments will be offered as substantive posts.

The recruitment process will consist of a functional fitness assessment and OSPEs, and a panel interview week beginning 4thSeptember.
