Job summary:


Due to the ongoing expansion of our General Surgical Virtual Ward at the QEHB, we are recruiting a motivated, proactive and adaptable individual to join our general surgery Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) team to help expand the service.


We are at the forefront of developing a Virtual Ward for surgical patients at QEHB to allow for improved patient flow and a better patient journey.

Your role will involve liaising with the on-call consultant in identifying patients for the Virtual ward and contacting them on a daily basis.

You will have support from the ACP team, helping to develop and lead the service as we move forward. As this is a clinical role, health assessment skills will be essential.


This role will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the Surgical Assessment Unit and will also be required to work shifts and unsocial hours including weekends.


Essential for any applicant:
Clinical assessment skills and previous leadership experience.

Current registration with the NMC

We are ideally looking for someone with general surgical knowledge who is motivated and able to lead the development of a new service.


  • To attend the General Surgical handovers and join the ward rounds to identify potential patients.
  • To undertake telephone consultations with patients on a daily basis, supported by the ACP team.
  • To lead on service change and develop the Virtual Ward with the support of the ACP team.
  • To work clinically with the ACP team as needed.

  • Registered Adult Nurse on NMC register

  • Professional Portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • Substantial relevant and recent clinical experience within a complex health care setting or Acute NHS setting working as a deputy Manager Band 6 position including the supervision and education of junior staff/ students.
  • Can demonstrate understanding / experience / in practice based supervision / assessment as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • Demonstrable current, recent experience of team leadership and management within the healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the management responsibility for pay and nonpay resources associated with the clinical service.
  • Evidence of effective multiprofessional working.
  • Experience of being a mentor
  • Demonstration of a significant contribution to innovative practice or change management
  • Experience in interviewing and selection of staff
  • Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice
