One substantive consultant post in obstetrics has become available in the Women's Health Directorate at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR).

We are looking for an outstanding colleague who will complement and enhance our obstetric services. The post holder will contribute to emergency obstetrics cover (currently on a 1:12 rota but under review). We would welcome interests to complement the department in particular clinical governance. Experience in complex maternal medicine, high-risk pregnancies such as multiple pregnancies, and obstetric research would be advantageous.

The post holder would be on call with a gynaecologist/gynaecological oncologist who would manage gynaecology emergencies and complex procedures emergency procedures out of hours.


The role will involve leading a high-risk obstetrics antenatal clinic as well as joining the team of another special interest antenatal clinic.

There will be day time delivery suite allocation and elective Caesarean operating.

LTHTR has over 4,500 births annually and hosts a level 3 neonatal unit.

We provide maternity care for a wide range of complex specialised disorders including pregnant women with neurosurgical disorders, complex renal and haematological disorders.


Lancashire Teaching Hospital will be one of three centres in the Northwest which have been accredited as a hub of the maternal medicine network.

The hub at LTHTR being responsible for co-ordinating the care required for this cohort of women in Lancashire and Cumbria and will be closely linked with similar hubs in Manchester and Liverpool.


We are privileged to work closely with a nationally recognised, award winning team of midwives dedicated to improving the birth experience for all women.

We offer all 4 choices for place of birth. There are midwifery led birth units on both sites and a 12 bedded obstetric unit in Preston. There is an established home birth service.


Women's Health is home to an active research team giving research opportunities within the NIHR badged on-site Lancashire Clinical Research Facility and involvement in research is actively sought from all the consultants.

The Women's Health team are keen in providing education and training. Many of the consultants have a senior educational role both in and outside the Trust. There are three well equipped education centres.

The Trust is recognised as a centre for simulation and human factors training, with several Women's Health consultants holding leadership roles.
