Job summary

As a key member of the Medical Education team, you will facilitate the design and delivery of an undergraduate medical student programme at will manage the day to day quality of the academic programme, supporting a diverse range of clinicians involved in teaching and evaluation. You will problem solve issues arising, working collaboratively and sensitively with internal and external stakeholders including the Tyne Base Unit team, patients and clinicians. A high level of autonomy is essential for the successful delivery of this role.

Main duties of the job

Communicate effectively and efficiently with the Medical Education team, providing regular verbal and written updates, and escalating concerns promptly to the Medical Education Programme Manager.

Build and maintain collegiate working relationships with a wide range of academic and NHS organisations.

Liaise with key academics and clinicians to support the continued quality of the undergraduate medical education programme and uphold quality standards as set out by Health Education England.

Work closely with simulation faculty members to ensure the scheduling and effective delivery of simulation-based education sessions.

Communicate sensitively with patient volunteers involved in supporting medical student assessments.

Effectively employ negotiation and persuasion skills when scheduling complex timetables.

Responsible for the day to day administrative supervision, training and guidance of the Undergraduate Administration team (Programme Support Assistants) including regular 1:1s and appraisals.

Aid the Programme Support Assistant in providing pastoral student support, including addressing any professional and personal concerns affecting learning.

Maintain relationships with overseas students, ensuring the appropriate information is gathered for their specified attendance records.

Promote a positive learning environment for all medical students, emphasising the need for professionalism at every stage of the programme.

Job responsibilities

Manage and plan the delivery of an academic programme of study for medical students assigned to the Trust, including arranging appropriate clinical placements.

Ensure all medical students receive individual educational plans/timetables in a timely manner.

Maintain accurate records including adhering to national quality standards for attendance and assessment outcomes.

Manage, plan and run large scale education events including examinations and formal assessments, (for example end of placement assessments, OSCEs and Moslers).

Ensure relevant quality processes are adhered to when conducting formal assessments and examinations.

Work with the Clinical Teaching Fellows and others to oversee effective booking of specialised teaching areas, ensuring the smooth delivery of teaching activities across a range of locations including ward areas, outpatient clinics, and theatres.

Successfully resolve complex issues relating to the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum which have been escalated by the Programme Support Assistant, using judgement where necessary to further escalate serious concerns to the Clinical Skills Manager or Medical Education Programme Manager. Serious issues may include professional conduct or student welfare concerns.

Analyse medical student feedback gathered via surveys and stakeholder evaluations, identifying and responding to any areas of emergent concern.

Provide support to the Lead Clinical Teaching Fellow and other Clinical Teaching Fellows, interpreting and applying guidance on medical student professionalism issues, and escalation pathways to the Tyne Base Unit and university medical school.

Work proactively with the Lead Clinical Teaching Fellow to identify mechanisms to improve the quality of the planning and delivery of the medical undergraduate programme.

Responsible for the day to day administrative supervision, training and guidance of the Undergraduate Administration team (Programme Support Assistants) including regular 1:1s and appraisals.
