The Role

Your role will be to process and analyse multiple genomic/transcriptomic datasets derived from patient samples and models of childhood Burkitt lymphoma. You will be responsible for performing an integrated bioinformatics analysis of those data. That analysis will involve the use of both in house and published sequencing data and will rely both on established and novel pipelines.

The project aims to repurpose existing datasets to further our understanding of the basic molecular biology of childhood Burkitt lymphoma. This rare blood cancer has a high rate of cure but for the small proportion of children whose disease relapses, outcomes are very poor. We are looking to understand both the determinants of risk of relapse and the biological processes which drive therapy resistance.

Key Accountabilities


• Although working under the general guidance of an academic or Principal Investigator, the postholder will contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of their studies, thus providing substantial 'added value'

• Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the personal requirements

• Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support where required

• Contribute to grant applications submitted by others and in time develop own research objectives and proposals for funding

• Begin to write, with appropriate support, proposals for individual research funding or, where funders do not permit this, contribute to the writing of collective bids

• Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations

• Contribute to the writing up of their research for publication and dissemination, either through seminar and conference presentations or through publications

• Present research findings, either at conferences or through publications in reputable outlets appropriate to the discipline

• May be involved in the supervision, with guidance, of final year undergraduate research projects and in providing support to postgraduate research students or Research Assistants

• Will need to work with the support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute.

• May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science/social sciences/humanities

• Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


• Ability to work well as part of a team and rapidly acquire new skills

• Detailed subject knowledge of Burkitt lymphoma and normal germinal centre biology

• Likelihood of advanced skills directly related to the research projects

• High level of analytical and problem-solving capability

• Ability to communicate complex information with clarity and to encourage the commitment of others

• Experience of research with clear transferable skills and some experience or awareness of the research environment

• Presentations at conferences and/or high-quality publications

• Ability to perform data analysis within appropriate environments/packages, including R

• Experience of use of high-performance computing facilities

• Detailed understanding and experience of the analysis of single cell RNA sequencing data derived from the 10X genomics platforms

Desirable

• Understanding of the current status of research within the field of childhood mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas

• Demonstrable commitment to patient and family engagement

Attributes and Behaviour


• Communicate effectively with team members, supporting the wider understanding of their project within the group

• Demonstrate their own flexibility, being able to work on multiple sub-projects at once and contributing to the development and delivery of the wider group's goals

• Foster an open and inclusive environment where data can be discussed and interpreted by all team members

• Be willing to undertake a period of dedicated training at collaborating institute (approximately 3 months)

Desirable

• Be excited by the prospect of learning and developing as a scientist

• Demonstrate the ability to communicate complex information with clarity

• Good time management and ability to prioritise to meet deadlines

Qualifications


• A PhD in cancer biology (required for appointment at Associate level)

• Honors degree in cancer biology or close to submission of PhD (for appointment at Assistant level)
