child abuse, terminal illness, photographs of injuries and wounds Working under pressure to meet monthly deadlines Job Purpose:

Demonstrate the ability to analyse, use judgement and extract relevant complex clinical information from case notes and electronic systems to translate to ICD-10 and OPCS classification codes.

Support Trust information, costing, statistical analysis and performance functions by ensuring accurate coding is achieved in a timely manner to achieve Trust deadlines.


Key Duties:

Carry out Clinical Coding by specialty, within Divisional Teams on a rotational basis, providing a link role to divisional management leads.

Implement and revise own working practices to accommodate changing service needs.

Communicate and liaise effectively with colleagues at all levels both clinical and non-clinical, both verbally and in writing, regarding complex coding rules, national standards and working practices.

Liaise with Clinical Coding Lead and appropriate clinicians to aid the resolution of coding queries, communicating complex coding rules and conventions.

Mentor to less experienced Clinical Coders and Clinical Coding Trainees.


Participate in the appraisal process and have a positive approach to identifying own training needs and areas for personal development.

Provide advice regarding appropriate codes, ensuring any queries which cannot be readily resolved are referred to the Clinical Coding Auditor or Clinical Coding Trainer.

Demonstrate coding expertise across all specialties for the purposes of self-development and to provide expert clinical coding guidance to the Clinical Coding Management.

Cover where and when required, across sites to meet the departments coding deadline of coding within 5 days of patient discharge.


Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD) and appraisal processes, for example: Undertake all statutory and mandatory training; Undertake all appropriate training as documented in the departmental training plan (whether provided internally or externally) e.g.

completion of e-learning, role based competencies, specialty workshops etc. Attend all departmental meetings across all sites and act as a representative for the department at relevant Trust meetings. Identify methods to improve data accuracy and collection.

Demonstrate the ability to organise, plan and prioritise own and Divisional Team workloads. Use all appropriate Trust clinical information systems, databases and libraries to access information to facilitate the coding process e.g. PAS, pathology systems, electronic patient discharge summary etc. Liaise with clinical, finance and information teams to ensure queries are resolved in a timely manner.

Responsible for liaising with Clinical Colleagues to ensure accurate coding and income maximisation is achieved within Divisional teams.

Advise on and provide ad-hoc information on national standards and coded data as and when required to both clinical and non-clinical staff.

Provide managerial cover across sites in the absence of Team Leaders.

Identify un-coded episodes to ensure coding is conducted in a timely and accurate fashion to ensure coding deadlines are achieved.

Ensure amendments to the ICD10 and OPCS 4 classifications and national standards are made accordingly in a timely manner. Demonstrate consistent and high levels of coding productivity in line with local guidance and policies. Participate in the internal clinical coding audit programme as required. Participate in research, audit, service evaluation and surveys as required.

Provide clinical codes to support research, audit and service evaluations as required.
