Position Details

Qualifications:

Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Cognitive Impaired Endorsement (SA), LD, or EI

Job Goal:

To meet the educational and transition needs of students on caseload and to comply with the special education requirements including but not limited to; completion of evaluations, reports, participation in meetings, development of educational goals, delivery of services and consultation with appropriate individuals. To prepare students for post secondary life including, but not limited to employment skills, daily living skills and community involvement skills.

Essential Duties:

Maintain a safe and orderly classroom providing supervision of students during school hours. Provide individualized instruction and classroom practices to meet the unique needs of secondary and post high school students to meet post secondary goals. Develop transition activities in the classroom and in the community as appropriate to meet the needs of the students. Evaluate student performance using formal and informal assessments. Maintain a written lesson plan to carry out instructional activities using and integrating technology. Demonstrate skills to meet the needs of students using equipment, materials and resources. Demonstrate effective management of student behavior using district approved techniques. Consult and coordinate with support staff and community agencies to ensure effective instructional and transition programming. Maintain effective communications and relationships with students, parents, administrator, school personnel and community representatives. Effectively participate in meetings, committees, staffings, and other required district activities, including but not limited to: parent/teacher conferences, IEPs, school improvement, team meetings, department meetings and professional development Maintain accurate and timely records. Follow prescribed building emergency procedures including but not limited to: tornado, fire, crisis, medical and abuse/neglect. Inform the Supervisor of Special Education immediately of emergencies, accident or illness and document on appropriate district report forms submitted to the Supervisor. Prepare for and participate in the IEP and MET process. Comply with Medicaid billing procedures. Maintain confidentiality. Be aware of various augmentative/assistive devices and techniques and utilize them in the classroom whenever possible. Dispense and record student medication. Direct oversight of paraprofessionals. Adhere to Board Policies and Procedures. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

Walk long distances in community-based instruction. Redirect, lift and position physically involved students. Physically assist with aggressive student behavior Demonstrate home living skills and physically assist students with hands-on experiences. Use universal precautions at all times for personal health and safety. Participate in CPI, CPR, AED and First-Aid training. Must be able to lift thirty (30) pounds. Required to have a physical presence at the designated job site each scheduled work day.

General Responsibilities:

Other duties as assigned. Adhere to Board Policies and Procedures.

Reports to: Supervisor of Special Education

This is a full-time position within the BIEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions established by the Administration.
