We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who would like the opportunity to work in a supported learning environment to develop the skills and knowledge within respiratory physiology and complete andApprenticeship qualificationto become a qualifiedRespiratory Physiologist.


You will undertake a training scheme over3 yearsin a joint venture between theSomerset Lung CentreandUWE Bristol, studying towards an AHCS accredited degree in Healthcare Science (Respiratory and Sleep) alongside a structured on-the job training program.

University fees and education costs will be covered by the Trust via the national Apprenticeship levy.


The apprenticeship delivery is based around one week long block atUWE(University of the West of England)Bristolper term, with the remainder of your time spent in post atMusgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.


Thanks to UWE Bristol's unique collaboration with NHS providers, you will have access to placement and in-post training options, and take on valuable work-based learning, supported by the latest equipment and online study resources.


One day per week will be designated for University study (tutorials, webinars etc.) with this designated time for completion of a work based portfolio.


On completing this apprenticeship successfully, you will have aBSc(Hons) in Healthcare Science (Physiological Sciences), with recognition of their specialist pathway in respiratory and sleep physiology.


The Somerset Lung centre has a small team of 4 respiratory physiologists, 1 apprentice respiratory physiologist, supporting the outpatient clinics for 6 consultants and 4 respiratory nurse specialists.

The physiology team also perform tests with inpatients by the bedside or within the lab depending on what is required.

We are a busy department, seeing patients per month for a wide variety of investigations.

Team work and clear communications is key to the job as well as providing good quality technical investigations to help with the diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory patients.


The busy Respiratory Physiology department at Musgrove Park Hospital offers a range of Respiratory investigations including, full pulmonary function testing, sleep diagnostics, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, and is responsible for delivering Home ventilation service (CPAP/NIV).


Your working week will be Monday to Friday 9am until 5pm however some flexibility may be required due to clinical and university placements.

The ability to work as part of a team and to have a flexible approach to work is essential. You should have good IT skills, including use of a range of complex equipment.

Main duties will be to undertake training to enable accurately perform unsupervised, as an independent practitioner a range of tests on patients from various ethnic origins and with varying abilities and disabilities the following routine investigations:

  • Spirometry
  • Reversibility testing administration of bronchodilator drugs where appropriate
  • Gas Transfer Test
  • Body Plethysmography
  • Lung volumes by helium dilution
  • Pulse Oximetry
  • Sleep study investigation and treatment initiation
  • Attend all college training and use study days to full effect
