The post will predominantly support the sustained increase in workload across the male genital oncology and reconstruction (MGOR) service with the intention to maintain expediant contemporary management of patients suspected and diagnosed with premalignant genital disorders, penile cancer and other male genital malignancies.

This will include multidisciplinary clinics and joint operating. This may require outreach clinics and operating at partner sites.


Appointees will also be expected to adopt a secondary subspecialist interest that complements the current portfolio of supraregional urological services including: testis cancer (complex primary management and retroperitoneal surgery), sarcoma, complex retroperitoneal, late effects (including penile prosthesis), core urology and multivisceral multidisciplinary surgery.


The appointee will participate in a 1 in 6 oncall service for those patients under the care of The Christie.

This is supported by an oncall middle grade, advanced nurse practitioner and The Christie Hotline advice service.

The appointee will join a cohesive and progressive team of:

  • Seven Consultant urologists,
  • Six Uro-Oncology specialist nurses,
  • Five Middle grades (2 Specialist trainees, 3 Clinical/Research Fellows)
  • Four Secretarie


In addition the fundamental approach to treatment at the Christie is as part of a multidisciplinary team within tumour and disease groups with patients placed at the centre.

Close collaboration therefore exists with the departments of medical oncology, clinical oncology and other surgical specialities, which enables the fostering of strong clinical and reseach partnerships.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The medical establishment provides the following staff within the urology department:

  • Seven Consultant urologists (2 on SLA contracts with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust from Northern Care Alliance and Manchester NHS Foundation Trust)
  • Six Uro-Oncology specialist nurses
  • Five Middle grades (2 Specialist trainees, 3 Clinical/Research Fellows)
  • Four Secretarie


The appointee will be based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Withington, Manchester, although may be required to provide outreach clinics and surgery at other partner sites across the Northwest of England and will provide senior input to the management of patients with penile cancer.

Thy appointee will be expected to take a role in the following domains:

Mentoring


In recognition of the specialist and unique nature of the position there is the possibility of a period of mentorship for up to 12 (as required) with the incumbent consultant(s).

The trust also has a history of supporting experience gained in other trusts which can be negotiated.

On Call Commitment

The appointee will be expected to participate in an on-call rota on a 1:6 basis on a single site

Prospective cover

The appointee will be expected to provide prospective cover for the penile cancer service.

Service development

The appointee will look to expand the service, utilizing the latest technologies (as well as continue to develop research streams in penile cancer

Teaching and Education


The Christie is a designated teaching hospital, and the surgical departments play an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching supporting the University of Manchester Medical School.

The post holder will be expected to promote excellence in learning and teaching and directly teach and mentor undergraduate medical students for the University.


The department of surgery participates in the clinical undergraduate teaching programme of the University of Manchester and students visit the hospital for seminar, outpatients, and bedside teaching at different stages in their training.

Consultants are expected to participate in the specialist registrar and F2 teaching programme.

The Christie surgical department also hosts consultant urological surgeons from many countries as visiting surgeons.

Secretarial and office support


The post will be adequately supported with secretarial staff and the appointee will be provided with access to the Trust's IT system.

Management


The post-holder will be expected to take a lead role in ensuring delivery of a quality service; including implementing and ensuring compliance with Trust and national policies and procedures.

They will be expected to get involved in any service improvements associated within the department. In addition, there are monthly consultant and directorate meetings which the appointee will participate in.


The post-holder will work with the management team to ensure that services are delivered within agreed parameters, such as the national cancer waiting times.

The clinical director within the consultant group negotiates administrative duties within the surgery department and consultants are expected to accept responsibility for at least one area.
