General Summary

Bonnier Books UK is looking for a talented and highly creative Designer to join the Big Picture Press team.

Big Picture Press books are created by, and made for, the incurably curious.

Since launching in 2013 with the publication of the Mizielinski's _Maps_ and Katie Scott's _Animalium_, it has made an indelible mark on the non-fiction market with its boutique range of illustrated gift books.

Focusing on extraordinary visual presentation, Big Picture Press collaborates with internationally renowned artists such as Chris Wormell, Sarah Maycock and Emma Carlisle to create visually inspiring books for readers of all ages around the world.

Reporting into the imprint head, your role would be to project manage and creatively guide the creation of books, making sure all books are produced to an exceptional design quality and to the technical specifications required, as well as on schedule.

As part of a supportive and friendly team, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the programme through new ideas and acquisitions.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate good knowledge of the non-fiction market, demonstrate exceptional design and typography skills, and have an eye for the very best talent in illustration.

The Big Picture Press list comprises of picture books, non-fiction and gift titles, so an understanding of different age ranges and formats is necessary.

Knowledge of the graphic novel market and merchandising would also be of interest.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Creatively guide and coordinate the books in line with creative briefs, making sure all files are directed through the correct design approval workflow.
  • Research, brief and layout a wide range of books across different formats to make the best product possible.
  • Make sure all files are to the technical accuracy required and to the design quality expected during all stages final files, plotter and advance stages.
  • Research and suggest ideas for the future publishing list, showing awareness of marketplace and trends.
  • Projectmanage books in partnership with Editorial and Production, making sure key milestones are kept to and final files are supplied on time.
  • Liaise and manage 3rdparty contributors, including packagers, illustrators and other freelance agents that are needed to create a project.
  • Problemsolve and/or escalate problems in the correct manner and in good time to allow schedules to be hit.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years design experience in the publishing industry
  • A dynamic, proactive, team player
  • A very good understanding of the design process
  • Excellent technical skills on key software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Experience managing illustrators, freelance designers and agents
  • In addition to being a fantastic designer, you will have excellent organisational skills, the ability to maintain schedules and meet deadlines and liaise closely with the editorial, sales and production teams to ensure that all projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard.
