Job Title -Groundkeeper

Salary -£24,960 from

Responsible to -The Clerk and the Working Parks and Cemeteries Manager

Hours of Work -40 (Normally worked Mon-Fri)

Main purpose of the post:


To provide an efficient, courteous and polite service to members of the public, working as part of our Open Spaces team, carrying out various duties maintaining land and property in the ownership or care of the Council including Parks and Open spaces, Play areas, Council buildings, Allotments, and Cemeteries.

Main duties:


To undertake, either individually, or as a member of a team, a range or horticulturally based maintenance activities including the cutting and strimming of grass, hedge cutting, pruning, tree maintenance, planting and weed spraying.

Work also to include, maintenance and installation of play areas, maintenance of footpaths, litter picking, cleaning of public toilets and sweeping.


  • Such other duties appropriate to the responsibility of the post as required from time to time by the Clerk and the Working Parks and Cemeteries Manger
  • To attend meetings appropriate to the responsibility of the post as required from time to time (sometimes outside normal working hours).
  • Responsible for daytoday compliance with Health and Safety matters including daily safety checks to all vehicles, machinery and equipment that is required in order to carry out the daily maintenance work; maintain and use Personal Protective Equipment PPE; and assist in carrying out health and safety risk assessments associated with delivering the service.
  • To carry out such administrative duties associated with the post and to maintain records and report sheets up to date.
  • To undertake such duties of a comparable nature and level of responsibility as may be required from time to time by the Working Parks & Cemeteries Manger or the Parish Clerk in their absence.
  • To deal effectively with general queries from members of the public.
  • To take reasonable care for your health and safety and have regard to other persons who may be affected by the performance of your duties, in accordance with the provisions of Health & Safety legislation, and Council Codes of Practice and Procedures.
  • To exercise proper care in handling, operating, and safeguarding any equipment, vehicle or appliance provided, used, or issued by the Council or provided or issued by a third party for individual or collective use in the performance of your duties.
  • To comply with the Council's policies and procedures.
  • To adhere to existing working practices, methods, procedures, undertake relevant training and development activities and to respond positively to new and alternative systems.

Person specification:

Skills, knowledge, and experience required:

  • Full UK driving licence (essential)
  • Use of rideon machinery, agricultural/horticultural vehicles, i.e. tractors, flails and associated equipment, including handheld and pedestrian equipment
  • Must be physically fit, able to walk, bend and lift bags, bins and other dumped items, load, unload and carry and hold equipment whilst undertaking work.
  • Ability to work on your own or as part of a team.
  • Required to be literate and numerate in order to complete work documentation and time sheets. To be able to read and understand plans
  • To be able to understand and use technology to communicate on a regular basis
  • Chainsaw certification desirable (training will be provided)
  • Spraying Certificate (PA1 & PA6)
  • Ability to assist with Bereavement Services burials, cremated remains, exhumations if specified
  • Have basic mechanical knowledge on how machinery works
  • A good knowledge of pruning, especially roses
