and main responsibilities

Undertake pre assessment, intraoperative and post-operative anaesthetic care of
patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery.

• Post-operative care to include follow-up and pain management.

• Know and be able to safely and competently deliver care during anaesthetic
emergencies in patients of all age groups.

• Communicate with supervising Consultant Anaesthetist for advice and support as
required and not act beyond the level of own competence (escalating to the oncall
consultant anaesthetist out-of-hours)

• Attend cardiac arrests/trauma calls and support critically ill patients, both on the
ward and in the Emergency Department, to support the primary responder.

• Provide intra- and inter-hospital transfers of critically unwell patients.

• Supervise, train and support less experienced anaesthetic colleagues (including the
Anaesthetic junior trainee/fellow, 222-bleep holder)

• Provide out-of-hours acute pain management as required (with the Anaesthetic junior
trainee/fellow)

• Be familiar with the Trust's Major Incident policy and other significant departmental
policies

• Perform duties on occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the
request of the appropriate consultant in consultation where applicable with his/her
colleagues both senior and junior

• Effect detailed handover at the end of a duty shift.

• Attend teaching sessions and departmental meetings including Clinical Governance.

• Participate in audit, risk management, clinical governance and teaching.

• Keep up to date with mandatory training and ensure familiarity and compliance

Essential criteria

Possession of a basic medical qualification (e.g. MBBS or Equivalent Registerable Medical Qualification) acceptable to the GMC for registration.
• Provision of evidence of good standing from the applicant's local medical regulatory council.
• Demonstrate knowledge of English by obtaining an overall score of 7.5, with minimum scores of 7.0 in speaking, listening, reading and writing. In the 'Academic' test of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
• Eligibility for PLAB exemption.
• Provision of two structured, supportive references from supervising consultants, both of whom must have worked with the applicant within the last 2 years.
• Provision of evidence of a postgraduate qualification acceptable to the RCoA (e.g. primary FRCA Eligibility for PLAB exemption.

Desirable criteria

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND EFFECTIVENESs Minimum of 4 years of anaesthetic training (including current practice), equivalent to UK ST4+ level, including critical care experience.
• Minimum of 6 months of work in the NHS.
• Advanced Life Support certification (UK or equivalent).
• Appropriate knowledge, practical skills and attitude to independently preoperatively assess and anaesthetise ASA 1-3 patients with distant supervision.
• Ability to identify high risk patient preoperatively.
• Ability and attitude to recognise a deteriorating patient and when to call for help.
• Familiarity with core anaesthetic national guidance, eg DAS guidelines for failed intubation. Participation in clinical audit Understanding of audit principles and commitment to its use as a tool for raising and maintaining standards.
