About the role:

Data Scientists within the Fulfilment department research, design and build models & algorithms to optimise decisions.

This covers areas across In-Store Fulfilment (where we continuously look for ways to further optimise manual order picking) and CFC (our highly automated fulfilment centres).

We are looking for an experienced manager to lead our cross functional team (London, Hatfield, Sofia).

  • Leading a team of six data scientists to research, develop and deploy sophisticated smart systems within the fulfilment area of the Ocado Smart Platform. This covers areas such as instore picking optimisation, fulfilment pick time prediction, and labour optimisation.
  • Identifying opportunities to add value using machine learning, engaging product managers across the Fulfilment stream by the development of proofs of concept.
  • Working with product managers to ensure integration work between data science outputs and backend services is properly planned and executed.
  • Ensuring the team is set up for a healthy pace and cadence of delivery
  • Mentoring and coaching data scientists via weekly 1:1s, goal setting and frequent feedback
  • Hiring, leading and developing a team that is diverse and continuously delivering
  • Driving initiatives that raise the bar of existing data science best practices and processes, within the team and across the wider organisation.

What we're looking for:

  • Strong data science background, including solid coding Python skills. It is a plus if you have experience working in operational research and optimisation techniques
  • Experienced building machine learning solutions end to end, from discovery to production
  • Someone who is curious and is comfortable thinking outside the box
  • Someone who values collaborative over individual ways of working and is comfortable being challenged by others
  • Experienced in coaching and developing others
  • Confident in what a high performing team looks like, and what it takes to shape one
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, both technically and organisationally. Favours pragmatism and is focused on quick outputs to learn fast and iterate.
