Our client is looking for an experienced Gardener to assist the Garden Manager in maintaining the stunning grounds of their housing development in Blackheath.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, supportive, and dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the residents. This campus, operated by a charity, is committed to promoting independence for older adults, offering them lifelong homes as they age.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all types of mowers, including ride-on mowers, for lawn maintenance
  • Edge, trim, and maintain lawns to ensure a neat appearance
  • Scarify and spike lawns for improved health and growth
  • Maintain fine turf areas, including sports areas like hammer and putting greens
  • Apply lawn fertilisers and manage to water using hosepipes and sprinklers, including watering pots and urns
  • Plant and maintain seasonal bedding, shrubs, and trees; prune fruit trees and shrubs; propagate hardwood cuttings and perform potting
  • Prune roses and apply rose fertilisers; remove epicormic shoots from trees
  • Clear leaves using leaf blowers, rakes, or brooms; make and apply compost
  • Apply rock salt or other materials and clear snow and ice from pathways and roadways
  • Mix and apply chemical sprays for pest and weed control.
  • Trim hedges using manual and power-assisted equipment; perform single and double digging of areas both manually and with a rotavator
  • Conduct soft landscaping tasks
  • Perform basic brick edging, and lay slabs and timber or metal edging
  • Oversee labelling and sign writing for plants and garden areas.
  • Clean and maintain horticultural machinery and hand tools; organise and tidy Grounds Department sheds, storage, and compost areas
  • Load and unload skips, containers, or other delivery vehicles.
  • Maintain garden furniture and features, including cleaning and applying preservatives

Skills and Experience

  • C&G Stage 2 Amenity Horticulture OR RHS Certificate Horticulture Level 2 Practical and Theory OR NVQ Level 3 Amenity Horticulture
  • A minimum of 3 years practical experience in horticulture
  • Chain saw certificate
  • Mixing and use of chemicals certificate
  • Spraying certificate
  • H&S certificate
  • Horticulture
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Use of Machinery
  • Soft landscaping
  • Garden Planning
  • Forward Planning skills
