An exciting opportunity is available to join the Force Crime Registrar Unit as an Assistant Crime Data Auditor role, which aims to enhance the service to victims by ensuring accurate and ethical recording of incidents and crime.

This position is based at Thames Valley Police headquarters in Kidlington and offers hybrid working.

As the Assistant Crime Data Auditor, your primary role will involve auditing incident and crime records to assess the force's compliance with National Incident and Crime Recording Standards and other legal requirements. You will play a key part in reporting audit findings, providing recommendations for improvement, and supporting the Force Crime Data Auditor and Force Crime Registrar in driving enhancement initiatives, including advising on system and process enhancements for recording incidents and crime.

In this role, you will have the autonomy to adjust crime recording decisions and classifications in cases of errors, overriding previous decisions made within the organization. The ability to make sound judgments, articulate decision-making clearly, and document decisions effectively is paramount.

Recent and demonstrated knowledge of the National Standard of Incident Recorded (NSIR) and the National Crime Recording Standards (NCRS) is vital for this role. You should possess exceptional attention to detail, effective communication skills, personal credibility to influence various levels, and the motivation to work independently while maintaining up-to-date technical expertise.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Conduct audits as per the Annual Audit Schedule to ensure ethical and consistent crime and incident recording, complying with National Crime Recording Standard (NCRS), Home Office Counting Rules (HOCR), National Standard for Incident Recording (NSIR), and Home Office Annual Data Requirement (ADR).
  • Specialist audit of Designated Decision Makers (DDM) at the direction of the Force Crime Data Auditor to ensure compliance with HOCR.
  • Identify and report any unethical crime recording practices, notifying the FCDA to uphold statutory obligations and professional standards.
  • Present audit findings, make improvement recommendations, and advise on enhancing systems and processes for crime recording.
  • Stay updated on national best practices in crime recording compliance auditing and HMIC activities related to crime data quality risks.
  • Provide support to FCRU in addressing surge demand and HMICFRS activities.

Essential Criteria:

  • Self-motivated with the capability to work independently.
  • Objective thinking, sound judgment, and proficient documentation of decision-making.
  • Education to a good standard or equivalent experience.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Conscientiousness, meticulous attention to detail, and willingness to undergo relevant training.
  • Experience in risk identification and management for service recovery.
  • In-depth knowledge of NCRS, HOCR, NSIR, and crime recording routes.
  • Familiarity with Force IT systems for crime recording.
