Job summary

STAR Service is Short Term Assessment and Reablement service provided by Sandwell Council. Working with people (over 18yrs of age) in their own homes, we aim to support and encourage them to regain and retain as much of their independence as possible.

The service works closely Community Health colleagues and other parties to ensure that all aspects of the individuals health and wellbeing is looked after.

Main duties of the job

Tasks include;

Supporting with all aspects personal care. Meal preparation. Supervising/administering medication. Encouraging exercise regimes. Basic Shopping.

Whilst previous care experience is desirable, it is not essential and full training and support will be provided. You need to have a kind, warm and caring nature.

You must be a car owner/driver.

Hours

20 & 24 hour contracts available

Successful candidates are required to undertake an Enhanced DBS check with Adults barring check.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The care provided by a Home Support Assistant is that which gives the people who use our services the choice of

living independently in his or her own home, and does not include tasks which would normally be undertaken by a

trained nurse. The following list illustrates some of the duties, which a Home Support Assistant may be asked to

undertake. At all times they must comply with Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Councils guidelines and policies.

To work within a network of services delivering a multi-disciplinary care plan, consisting of nurses, social workers,

occupational and physiotherapist and health and social care co-ordinators and support staff, to promote and enhance

the independence of the people who use our services.

To visit people who use our services in their own homes and other community settings, for examples: Extra Care

Accommodation and other similar settings to provide the appropriate level of support as defined in the Care Plan.

This will include aspects of health-related personal care tasks, hygiene, exercises, activity and treatment programmes

prescribed by therapists. The aim being to rehabilitate and maximise the person who is using our services, potential

and where appropriate to support the carer.

As part of the care given to people who use our services, it will also be necessary to undertake administration and

clerical tasks that are associated with the care process.

To support and enable people who use our services in a range of activities to promote independent living and monitor

their wellbeing:

o Personal care/bathing/showering/toileting/shopping

o Meal preparation

o Supervising and/or administering medication

o Confidence building

o Exercise programmes/mobility

Experience

Essential

Experience of working with adults with a disability or older people, older people with mental health needs.

Special Knowledge

Essential

Knowledge of health and safety issues within peoples own homes. Awareness of standards set the Care Qualtiy Commission

Qualifications

Essential

Full Driving Licence, with Access to own car

Practical & Intellectual skills

Essential

Able to maintain confidentiality. Be able to assess situations and use initiative. Able to promote dignity, privacy and respect for individuals who may be vulnerable. Able to promote independence of people who use our services wherever possible.
