An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced pharmacist to assist the Principal Pharmacist in delivering an excellent clinical pharmacy service to the pre-assessment unit.

This is a full-time role (37.5 hours per week + on-call) to cover maternity leave for 12 months.

You will have the characteristics of a self-motivated, dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking individual with excellent communication skills and a background in acute hospital pharmacy service provision such that you can provide clinical expertise to shape the pre-assessment services for the Trust.

Provide a high quality, safe and effective specialist clinical pharmacy service to the PAC
Assess and prioritise pharmaceutical requirements for patients reviewed at the PAC for surgical procedures
Supervise and teach pharmacists, pre-registration students, undergraduate pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians in the provision of pharmacy services to the PAC
Undertake clinical audits and projects within the PAC
Provide medicines related training and development to doctors, nurses and pharmacy staff

There is extensive scope for the successful applicant to develop on both a personal and professional level through exposure to all departmental activities, contributing towards portfolio building and the opportunity for further roles in the future.

Computer skills are essential. Ideally, the post holder should have previous NHS experience and be working towards or completed a clinical pharmacy diploma.

The RNOH Pharmacy provides a comprehensive array of pharmacy services with the overall aim of providing outstanding patient care and safe, effective and economical use of medicines throughout the Trust as well as supporting education and training and promoting research.

The RNOH medicines optimisation strategy is varied, interesting and rewarding.

This ranges from core clinical service provision, through to individual pharmacist clinical caseload management in clinics such as rheumatology/homecare, pre-operative assessment, outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) and chronic pain.


The opportunity exists for you to join a patient focused, forward thinking and highly motivated team of specialist clinical pharmacists, independent prescribing pharmacists, medicines optimisation technicians and pharmacy assistants in delivering high quality, safe and effective pharmacy and medicines optimisation services to patients and service users.

To contribute to the Trust medicines optimisation agenda to ensure delivery of a safe, clinically and cost effective pharmacy service to the PAC
To review local policies and guidelines on good prescribing practice
To ensure that service provision is flexible and responsive to patients needs
To be an educational supervisor to pre-registration pharmacists
To mentor and support junior members of staff
To contribute to the education and training programme for all pharmacy and clinical staff
To meet the department and Trusts audit agenda and quality improvement objectives
Critical evaluation of medicines expenditure and financial reporting

Degree in pharmacy (BPharm/MPharm depending on year of qualification), Approved by GPhC
Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy (or working towards completion in the second year)

Basic management training
Minimum 2 years in NHS Hospital Pharmacy
Experience in delivering training
Running telephone and in-person clinics for patients

Good written and spoken English
Computer literacy

Ability to concentrate on complex tasks and being able to cope with frequent interruptions for urgent requests - works well in busy environments.
