We are excited to announce an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work at Birkbeck, University of London, on research into the mechanisms of regulation of the cytoskeleton and the molecular basis of human disease.

As Postdoctoral Researcher you will research the mechanisms by which neuronal cytoskeleton components, neuronal organisation and function are disrupted in disease. You'll also be involved in the molecular and cellular structure determination of neuronal microtubule machinery, using cryo-electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography.

Based in the School of Natural Sciences at Birkbeck, as a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be involved in:

  • Carrying out research objectives relating to cryo-electron microscopy and structure determination of the neuronal microtubule cytoskeleton.
  • Conducting individual and collaborative research projects and writing up research for publication.
  • Translating knowledge of advances in the subject area into research activity.
  • Contributing to the assessment of student knowledge and supervision of their projects.
  • Assisting in the development of student research skills.
  • Communicating complex information, and material of a specialist or highly technical nature.

The ideal Postdoctoral Researcher will have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area such as structural biology or cellular neuroscience.
  • A strong background in structural biology, biochemistry or bioimaging.
  • Experience of utilising research methods and techniques particularly in structural biology.
  • Ability to work independently but also to co-operate and interact with other group members and outside collaborators.

You'll be working on regulatory mechanisms of cytoskeleton dynamics within the team led by Prof Carolyn Moores (Professor Carolyn Moores - School of Natural Sciences ), and will interact with members of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (ISMB) and users of the Electron Microscopy Facility ).

The research programme also involves collaboration with several international teams and is funded by the UKRI Medical Research Council.

Remuneration

£42,365 rising to £48,424 per annum. The salary, Grade 7, quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale.
