The People Analytics and Insight (PAI) Directorate, established in 2019, operates within HMRC's HR department. The Directorate's goal is to �positively impact colleague engagement and effectiveness by leveraging people information & insights through expert products & services.�

Role description

Join the dynamic People Analytics and Insights team at a pivotal moment, collaborating with a skilled group focused on providing actionable insights into key workforce trends at HMRC. �

As a people analytics and insights officer, you'll engage in a mix of quantitative data analysis and qualitative research. �

This position is part of the PAI Customer Delivery team, responsible for conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses and insights on HMRC's workforce. Activities include modeling, forecasting, optimization, research, survey design and implementation, and focus groups.

Given HMRC's substantial workforce of 65,000 employees, people analytics plays a critical role in driving organizational change and shaping its future. The team was formed to introduce a fresh approach to HR operations and enhance the effectiveness of key programs.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Understand HMRC's HR business needs for research and analysis to provide insights for evidence-based decision-making.
  • Collaborate with a project lead to ensure analytical outcomes align with service vision and business strategy.
  • Take ownership of various research and analytical projects to meet business requirements.
  • Synthesize data from diverse sources and craft a compelling narrative to drive action within the organization.
  • Adopt an agile approach to define, develop, and deliver analytical projects.
  • Create visually appealing outputs to communicate data-driven insights to stakeholders.
  • Effectively communicate data findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate within diverse teams to foster innovation and achieve common goals.

Candidate requirements

  • Experience in designing and executing analytical and insight projects.
  • Patient, level-headed, and able to work at a fast pace.
  • Proactive and capable of working independently.
  • Collaborative mindset and eager to work with others to achieve shared objectives.
Essential Criteria
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis.
  • Ability to interpret and present data using effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with data storytelling principles to develop engaging narratives from various data sources.
  • Knowledge of research ethics.
  • Proficient in statistical software like SPSS and R Studio.
  • Will to learn continuously to adapt to evolving research needs and methodologies.

Experience in two or more of the following:

  • Evaluation approaches (theory-based or experimental).
  • Qualitative research design and analysis (interview guides, focus groups).
  • Literature reviews or rapid evidence assessments.

Essential Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree with a minimum of 2:2, including sufficient research methods training (around one third of the modules taken during the course).
  • OR
  • At least 3 years of research practice experience, involving work in a research agency, market research agency, or specialized research team.

  • A presentation using dummy data provided a week before the interview, followed by technical questions related to the presentation.

In addition to a salary of �35,092, HMRC contributes �9,474 towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
