Medical Director

London, Greater London, United Kingdom NonStop Consulting Ltd Full time

With over 20 years in the market, my client, medical education agency, is looking to welcome a new Medical Director.

They support both medical and marketing teams in all aspects of medical communications: from global strategy and advocacy development to local disease and brand-led educational programmes

In recent years they have invested hugely in what we have come to know as broadcast medical education as increasingly their programmes are delivered via laptop or mobile devices, rather than the meeting-based approach that dominated medical communications fordecades.

The way the teams work with a joint sense of purpose is at the centre of their culture.
Their medical communication programmes are designed to help healthcare professionals make optimal clinical choices to improve patient outcomes.
The role is hybrid (slightly out of London). Salary will depend on experience.

Purpose of the role:

The Medical Director will oversee the output of the writing and editorial teams, lead the development of medical and scientific strategies for key accounts, will define the scientific strategy for key business development activities and assist the ManagingDirector in planning the company's scientific and strategic consultancy services.

Responsibilities:
**- Work with the MD and senior leadership team to build on the strategic plan for the business in terms of developing scientific services and enabling the winning of more strategic pre and peri launch accounts in line with the Company's business plan.

  • Work on new business proposals and pitches, ensuring the team understands the client challenges, overseeing data and insights gathering and leading on the scientific strategy and overall communications plan put forward. Take a lead role in proposal writingand pitches.
  • Manage the medical writing and editorial teams at Wave, line managing senior members, supporting them to grow and develop their teams and the systems and processes to ensure that the writing outputs are of the highest quality.
  • Provide scientific oversight across named accounts offering clients at a senior level strategic advice relating to communications planning pre, peri and post launch and help clients get internal buy in for their plans and strategies
  • Ensure that Wave is up to date on the market environment and therapy area news relevant to our current accounts.
  • To ensure that content of Wave's programmes / projects is of the highest standard in terms of scientific accuracy, relevance to client strategy and objectives, quality of storytelling and appropriateness for channel and audience.
  • Design and run strategic workshops with clients to help them in the strategic communications planning process
  • Develop and facilitate external workshops and expert panels and meetings related to scientific communications.
  • Take responsibility for the agency's client feedback scores around our strategic competency on accounts where we are working during the pre and peri launch phases.
  • To act as a mentor and coach for developing team members to develop their strategic abilities and knowledge.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Expertise in medical communications strategy in the pre, peri and post launch phases.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor and train other team members.
  • Expertise in communication, collaboration and negotiation.
  • Expertise in medical writing within both medical and marketing contexts.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the healthcare / pharmaceutical industry, trends and processes
  • Knowledge or direct experience of Medical Affairs roles, challenges and priorities within a pharma company
  • Knowledge of industry regulations, guidelines, policies and protocols.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior level Medical Affairs clients.
  • This role may require domestic and international travel

Critical Relationships

  • Important relationships include all members of the Strategic Leadership Team. There will be most interaction with Managing Director and Business Unit Directors as well as with senior members of the medical writing and editorial teams.

Minimum required education and experience:

  • A PhD or post graduate qualification in Medicine or a biomedical science plus at least 10 years' experience is a requirement. It would be an advantage (but not a necessity) to have clinical practice as a medical doctor
  • Extensive experience of working in a medical/scientific capacity within a medical communications agency or in a biopharma company within a medical affairs, medical, marketing or clinical capacity.
  • Experience of developing global communications programmes at a strategic level is essential, ideally at a global level as well as local.
