The Role


Creative Assembly is looking for an experienced Mid to Senior Designer to join the talented Total War team on a new entry into the franchise.

This role will be based at our headquarters in Horsham, in the heart of West Sussex.


You will report to the Lead Designer and work closely with the design team and other discipline experts to ensure that features align with the gameplay vision, and that the team is engaged with, and invested in, the development process.

Flexible working at Creative Assembly includes hybrid, fully remote within country of employment for eligible roles, and in-studio.

We recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all approach and empower our teams to define the working patterns which work best for them, which may mean different things for different teams and roles and at different times.

This role is Hybrid and has an expectation of 2 days per week in our Horsham studio. This role cannot offer fully remote working. Further details can be discussed during the recruitment process.

What you'll be doing


As a Designer, you are responsible for crafting the player experience, from initial feature ideation and planning through to prototyping, implementation and ongoing balancing and iteration.

You create systems and content that provide immersive, engaging, and valuable experiences that strive to meaningfully uphold the game's pillars, themes and vision.

You regularly and effectively communicate your design intentions, both verbally and in the form of high
- and low-level design documentation, as part of a collaborative and iterative game development process. Delivering an exceptional player experience through your work, is among your highest concerns, as is the desire to serve as a creative constant that helps inspire and bond the development team.


At the Developer expertise level, you have established yourself as a reliable member of the design team, capable not only of delivering good design work in good order, but in effectively collaborating with other members of the design team to collectively improve upon and learn from each other's problem-solving skills.

You know your design strengths and are able to use your experience to help train more junior members of the team as well as to push gameplay in exciting new directions.


At the Senior expertise level, you are a game design veteran who regularly delivers excellent gameplay design work, a self-motivated and effective problem solver valued by any team that you work for.

A balance of strong skills, self
- and team-awareness, and an understanding of the game direction gives you the confidence to both champion and challenge design work - including your own - and to embrace iteration when it is required. Your documentation is highly usable, and you leverage your experience to empower those around you and to help improve the quality of the game's overall design and development.

On a day-to-day basis you will:

  • Create and help to iterate the game's wide range of features, the systems that drive them and the content that shapes them
  • Cooperate with all designers to ensure that you collectively produce gameplay features and content that support the gameplay vision
  • Work as a key member of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating together with creative and technical experts, assisting one another in delivering meaningful, highquality player experiences
  • Identify and communicate potential opportunities, risks, and other implications of gameplay design and implementation approaches
  • Engage in effective gameplay design practice within the project, learning from, and wherever possible mentoring other designers within the project.

What we are looking for

  • Excellent game design skills, capable of developing features and content from concept to final implementation
  • Highly capable of gameplay abstraction, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and iterating accordingly
  • Ability to clearly communicate using a variety of methods to enable effective collaboration
  • Driven to collaborate with others for collective progress and problem solving
  • Proactive approach to bringing people together to ensure high level of alignment
  • For Senior shipped at least one title in a Senior Designer position.

Optional Extras

  • Deeply knowledgeable about and interested in a wide variety of games
  • Inspired to meaningfully build upon genre standards and create genre appeal
  • Experienced in other game design areas, such as AI or Narrative design
  • Experienced in gameplay scripting.
