Successful applicants will be working in a variety of community physical health settings including special schools, mainstream schools and community clinics. The roles offer the practitioners initial opportunities to explore different expertise areas within Paediatric OT with support from B7 seniors with the view to enable these practitioners to go further into selected specialisms. The service is committed to developing team members for career progression via on the job training, external training and regular CPD programmes.

Summary of the Role:

To work as a qualified Paediatric Occupational Therapist in different areas of Paediatric OT practice . To be an autonomous practitioner assessing patients, defining needs in relation to Occupational therapy and carrying out this intervention for own caseload, maintaining clinical and statistical records. To be responsible for own continuous professional development; build on previous experience enabling further development of clinical, administrative and leadership competencies. To supervise and support assistants, technicians and students. To be involved in service audit projects. To attend relevant departmental meetings. To attend and contribute to in-service training opportunities.

Working for our organisation

The Ealing Paediatric Occupational Therapy Service is an integral part of the Ealing Service for Children with Additional Needs (ESCAN). We are a dynamic and innovative team, who is also passionate about working with children, young people and families. ESCAN provides health, education and social services for children with complex needs. There is a high level of integration and collaboration between different health, education and social care services. The team is based at Carmelita House within Ealing Broadway.

We are highly valued by our local health colleagues, as well as education and social care partners. We enjoy good national reputation for innovative practices / services and we are also one of the few larger paediatric OT teams across the country – the service has been highly successful in getting funding from different agencies, with an establishment of more than 22 staff. We have a strong professional structure with Clinical Leads (Band 8a) and Advanced Therapists (Band 7), each leading on different aspects of the service delivery. There are also Band 6 & 5 Therapists and Band 3 Technicians. Regular CPD programmes and supervision structures are in place. This is a team with career progression opportunities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical / Professional Duties and Responsibilities:

To assess and manage own caseload of children with different conditions and needs within the OT service at different community and educational settings with supervision from the Band 7 Advanced Paediatric Occupational Therapist. The specific caseload will be arranged in relation to the post holder's clinical experience, preference and also stage of professional development within paediatric OT practice. To provide specialist assessment and intervention in the following areas according to the child's stage of development and specific needs with consideration of the social and family background, with clinical support provided by the supervising therapist if necessary:- Functional independence in activities of daily living: Participation in self-care activitiesParticipation in productive activitiesParticipation in play and leisure activities Minor and major adaptation for environmental modification.Special seating and positioning systems.Splinting to improve/maintain the functional use of arms and hands. To provide specialist OT advice to other disciplines and professionals. To be able to work flexibly and prioritise according to the child's needs, Departmental policies on service delivery and meeting of key performance indicators. To seek supervision and support from senior staff/supervisor when required. To carry out school/nursery and home visits to advise teaching staff/parents/carers on intervention activities. To provide written reports as well as written intervention programmes which incorporate functional occupational therapy aims into the child's home/school/nursery timetable. To liaise and work collaboratively with other health and multi-agency professionals to develop and implement comprehensive specialist intervention packages for children with complex conditions e.g. consultant paediatricians, social workers, etc. To deliver specialist training (both informal and formal) independently or together with senior staff within clinical area appropriate to the needs of course participants. This includes parents, carers, and health or education professionals both independently and in conjunction with other professionals. To deliver group, parent workshops or individual intervention sessions as deemed appropriate to the caseload. To carry out risk assessments and to keep up to date with and adhere to new guidelines and legislation regarding equipment provision, manual handling and safe working practices. To attend relevant courses, lectures and visits and keep up to date with relevant professional knowledge, mandatory trainings and to show evidence of application of knowledge in working practice. To supervise junior staff members (e.g. Band 5 OT, OT assistant/technicians) and/or OT students on practice placements and be responsible for their professional development through annual appraisals, PDP reviews and/or practice placement reviews. To contribute to the development of new service delivery models in order to facilitate the effective use of resources and meet the current demands and changes. Involve in different service development and clinical governance activities e.g. participate in clinical audits, undertake research etc. To provide clinical cover of urgent cases for other therapists who are on leave or vacancies in other service settings.

Administrative Duties and Responsibilities :

To keep up-to-date statistical information on clinical activities in a timely fashion according to Trust policies and key performance indicators. To keep up-to-date client register, records and reports of clients as appropriate e.g. electronic system, paper files. To keep a record of inventory of equipment belonging to the department in different service settings covered by the therapist. To help to maintain a good filing system for case files and clinical information within the base or areas of work including paper and electronic information. To follow Departmental procedures, e.g. sick leave arrangement, travelling claims, monthly attendance sheet, etc. To attend and make contribution in regular staff meetings and in-service training sessions e.g. Team CPD activities. To participate in quality assurance, clinical governance (e.g. audit), and outcome measures projects conducted by the Department or the Trust. To be responsible for the allocated fund within the whole service's budget for the purchasing of intervention resources within a particular community setting.
