As best Interest Assessor you will work within the Mental capacity Act / DoLS Team, to ensure compliance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards DoLS).


Working across the Health Board sites you will work as part of the wider multidisciplinary teams to undertake specific assessments as part of the overall DoLS Assessment process.


You will be supported with training to be able to undertake capacity assessments and devlop your knowlege and expertise in this area of work.


To be responsible for planning and organizing a range of complex assessment activities to ensure a comprehensive and responsive assessment service.


To support partner agencies in the appropriate involvement of patients, their carers' and other key stakeholders, including the voluntary sector and Social Services in MCA DoLS assessment processes.


To work with the Team Leader to ensure that service developments, pilot or otherwise are monitored appropriately and corrective action taken if they are not achieving the desired outcomes.

To provide and receive complex information from a number of sources e.g. Managing Authorities, Patient Representatives, Independent Mental Capacity Advocates and others.

To communicates with internal and external stake holders, Health Board and Local Authority Staff.


To support communication across complex Health / Social Care boundaries, for example Supervisory Bodies, Managing Authorities, Patient Representatives, Independent Mental Capacity Advocates and others.

This requires detailed communication by the post holder to ensure safe patient care.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

To undertake specific DoLS Assessment Roles including that of 'Best Interest Assessor' and therefore demonstrate:
Applied knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and related Code of Practice.

Applied knowledge of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards 2009 and related Code of Practice and emerging Case Law.

Understanding of the relationship between the DoLS and Safeguarding Adults principles.


The ability to keep appropriate records and to provide clear and reasoned reports in accordance with legal requirements and good practice.


The skills necessary to obtain, evaluate and analyse complex evidence and differing views to weigh them appropriately in decision making.

Applied knowledge of the social impact of disability, illness and injury on individuals and families.


To ensure all assessments made are done in a professional manner taking into consideration the unique circumstances of the patient / user as necessary.

Investigate allegations that a person may be deprived of their liberty without lawful authorization.

Undertake the role of Best Interest's Assessor and complete best interests and all supporting assessments within statutory timescales.


Decide if it is in a person's best interests for them to be deprived of their liberty and submit reports with recommendations to the Team Leader.

Investigate allegations that a person may be deprived of their liberty without lawful authorization.

Undertake reviews of Deprivation of Liberty Authorisations.

Set priorities, taking full account of service user's and carer's wishes.

Maintain record of assessment and produce necessary reports etc.
To take lead responsibility for arranging meetings, case conferences, reviews and committees as dictated by patient's needs.


Liaise with agencies that support, to liaise with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, Health Inspectorate Wales as appropriate.

Report to Supervisory Bodies in respect of any Vulnerable Adult Issues.
Attend POVA strategy meetings as a Best Interest Assessor.

To develop and implement multi-disciplinary assessment in accordance with the DoLS Assessment process.

To work in close collaboration with the Team Leader providing specialist knowledge and professional advice / support to Supervisory Bodies,
